The Boston Celtics are one loss away from being eliminated from the playoffs after falling to the Philadelphia 76ers 115-103 in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference semifinals series on Tuesday night. The Celtics looked flat and frustrated throughout the game, as they had no answer for Joel Embiid, who dominated with 33 points and seven rebounds, but not according to Celtics’ Head Coach Joe Mazzulla.

Instead of taking ownership of his team’s poor performance and making adjustments for the next game, Mazzulla gave a puzzling and dismissive response. He was asked about his message to his players after the game.

That was the first game of the playoffs that we didn’t play well in my opinion and so we can lose the perspective, we played really good basketball and that was our first really, really bad game of the playoffs, doesn’t come at necessarily at the best time, but we just have to shift our perspective and get ready for the next game,” Mazzulla said.

The Celtics are facing a tough challenge of winning two games in a row against the 76ers, who have been playing with confidence and chemistry under Doc Rivers. The 76ers have been getting contributions from their entire roster, including Tyrese Maxey, who scored 30 points in Game 5.

Mazzulla’s comments did not sit well with many NBA fans and experts who took to Twitter to criticize him for his lack of accountability and leadership. Many called him a “very mediocre coach” who has squandered the talent of his star players Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Some even suggested that he should be fired or replaced by a more competent coach.

The Celtics will need to find a way to contain Embiid, who has been unstoppable in the paint and on the perimeter. They will also need to improve their shooting and ball movement, as they have been relying too much on isolation plays and contested shots.

The Celtics will also need to show more energy and intensity on both ends of the floor, as they have been out-rebounded, outscored in the paint, and out-hustled by the 76ers. They are now on the brink of elimination and need to win two games straight to qualify for the Eastern Conference Finals.
