Philadelphia 76ers superstar Joel Embiid is not going through a great period in his career. Embiid was the frontrunner for the MVP trophy this season. He has already missed a few games this season.

Embiid only has 5 games left before his eligibility for that trophy will go up in flames. This is due to the NBA 65-game rule that discourages athletes from taking time off during the season. Now, his latest situation will only go on to confirm that in the coming days.

Embiid was criticized worldwide for intentionally missing the games at Denver and Portland. He skipped those games to rest his sore left knee, which has troubled him off late. He returned to play against the Golden State Warriors a couple of nights back. Only for a freak play to end him aggravating that same left knee. Embiid limped off the court.

As confirmed by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, now MRI scans have revealed that Embiid has further injured his lateral meniscus on the same left knee. Now it could take a few days to heal with a treatment plan if the injury is not too severe. So there is a high chance that Embiid will miss out on the MVP trophy altogether.

Joel Embiid was playing his best season to date. Last year he won the MVP. This year his performances have made him the frontrunner. Averaging 35.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, 5.7 assists, and 1.8 blocks was sure to get him to the top of the MVP race.

His motivation is to be regarded as one of the best players in the league. Adding another MVP trophy to his already great career will do nothing but advance him in that conversation.

But all that body of work will go to waste if he does not satisfy the NBA 65-game rule. Now, with his latest injury, it seems he will have to forego the award this year. It is an unfortunate situation. However, the NBA brought in the rule to ensure participation.

Hopefully, Joel Embiid can heal his knee properly. Whatever the time it takes. An NBA Championship should alleviate the loss of the MVP trophy.
