Joel Embiid is one of the best players in the NBA, but his future with the Philadelphia 76ers is uncertain after they fired head coach Doc Rivers following a disappointing playoff exit. The New York Knicks, who have been looking for a star to pair with Julius Randle and Jalen Brunson, are reportedly waiting for Embiid to ask for a trade.
According to Bill Simmons of The Ringer, the Knicks have been monitoring Embiid’s situation in Philadelphia and have the connections to lure him to New York. Simmons said on his podcast:
“The Knicks are just waiting for Embiid to say, ‘It’s time for me to go,’” Simmons said on his podcast. “They have their relationships. They have Leon [Rose] and [World Wide] Wes, who are his [Emiid’s] guys. They have been waiting for this moment right now, and it’s here.”
Joel Embiid has four years and $196 million left on his supermax contract with the Sixers, but that doesn’t mean he’s committed to staying in Philadelphia.
Could Joel Embiid be the answer to the Knicks’ woes?
The All-Star center has endured another disappointing playoff exit, losing to the Celtics in a hard-fought seven-game series in the second round.
Embiid’s chemistry with James Harden, who joined the Sixers in a midseason trade, was questionable at best. The two stars failed to deliver when it mattered most, shooting poorly in the final two games of the series. Harden is likely to opt out of his deal this offseason and could reunite with his former team in Houston, leaving Embiid alone to carry the Sixers.
The Knicks could be a potential suitor for Embiid if he requests a trade. They have the cap flexibility and the assets to make a compelling offer to the Sixers. They also have a roster that could fit well with Embiid’s skill set and a fan base that would embrace his charisma and passion.
Embiid has not indicated that he wants out of Philadelphia, but if he does, the Knicks might be his best option.
