John Stockton, the NBA’s all-time leader in assists and steals, recently expressed his opinions on LeBron James‘ influence on team decisions during an appearance on the DNP-CD podcast. He voiced concerns over how James’ involvement in team management decisions might affect the dynamics of the playing group and the front office.
“I don’t know what it’s like to sit in that front office and have things dictating to you like a plan, and it appears LeBron is,” Stockton said. He added, “I don’t know for sure that he is, but it’d be maddening as a teammate to know that you can be expendable for one of his guys that he thinks he needs to play with. The iffiness it causes with the team, the iffiness that it causes upstairs.”
While fans have long speculated about LeBron’s involvement in team decisions, it’s notable when an NBA Hall of Famer like Stockton shares his perspective. Many believe that LeBron’s influence played a part in team construction during his tenure in Miami, Cleveland, and, most recently, with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Kyrie Irving, a former teammate of LeBron in Cleveland, has previously hinted at James’ hands-on approach to team building. Additionally, recent team decisions, such as the Lakers’ acquisition and subsequent failure with Russell Westbrook, have further fueled this narrative.
LeBron James’ championship track record speaks volumes
Despite Jogn Stockton’s criticisms, it’s challenging to argue with the results of LeBron James’ involvement. Every franchise James has been a part of has seen the team’s fortunes change and result in championships.
Upon joining the Miami Heat in 2010, LeBron, along with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, created the famous ‘Big Three’, securing two NBA titles. His return to Cleveland was marked by a promise to deliver a championship, which he did in 2016, ending the city’s long-standing title drought.
Furthermore, during his time with the Lakers, his push for the acquisition of Anthony Davis proved successful, resulting in a championship victory in 2020.
Although some may sarcastically call him ‘LeGM,’ LeBron has always been most important to his teams. LeBron’s track record of championships is evidence of the success of his approach, even though the proper ratio between superstars influencing team choices and leaving it to management is still up for debate.
