John Wall was one of the best point guards to play in the NBA in the past 15 years. But injuries and personal issues mired Wall’s career towards the end. All of that led to serious mental health issues, leading to Wall contemplating suicide twice by putting a gun to his head.
John Wall was speaking with Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller on their podcast The OGs. Haslem brought up the topic of John Wall’s struggles with mental health.
Mental health is serious, so I had to go get a therapist after that. If it wasn't for my two boys, I would've killed myself. I put a gun to my head twice. I had a video came out, throwing up gang signs and stuff, that's when I was in my darkest moment, tryna figure out to find out happiness.John Wall
Wall’s mother had just passed away in 2019. That was the time when he mentioned that he flirted with suicide. Wall alluded that his mother passing away from cancer was too hard on him. What made matters worse was his season-ending injury a month later.
He mentioned that it would be unfair to both him and his kids if he had killed himself. He stopped himself from firing the gun both times for that reason. Wall also mentioned that no one was beside him at during his darkest moments. And he remembered his mother’s advice that all your friends would be gone when you need them most.
John Wall confirmed that he still goes to a therapist. And his therapy sessions have helped him move along in life. Obviously, his mother’s passing still hurts to this day, but he is in a better place than the days with a gun to his head.
John Wall was one of the top 10 players in the NBA
Wall was drafted by the Washington Wizards in 2010 with the 1st overall pick. He was the main attraction for the Washington Wizards since he entered into the league. Such was his stardom that the Washington Wizards built their squad around Wall in the hopes of targeting an NBA Title. Wall played for 9 seasons in Washington. During that time, Wall and the Wizards made the playoffs 4 times, always coming up short.
His final two seasons at Washington were plagued by injuries, leading to his trade to the Houston Rockets in 2020. Injuries again were the prime culprit for his disappointing time with the Rockets. Wall then signed with the Los Angeles Clippers. He was traded back to Houston in February, only to be waived three days later. Wall is currently a free agent after last playing in the 2022-23 season.
John Wall was a top-10 player during his first 9-10 years in the league. At the time he had a lot of people around him. But when he suffered from mental health issues, no one was around to pull him out of it. He considered resorting to suicide as an option. Thankfully, he did not take it.
