The Play-In tournament with its first four games has been entertaining, to say the least. The Western Conference Eliminator between Oklahoma City Thunder and New Orleans Pelicans was no different. As intense as it was, the game saw two players getting into a clumsy brawl. The Pelicans guard Josh Richardson, was seen knocking his elbow into Josh Giddey. The Thunder guard went down on the floor and quickly got up to face off Richardson before he was stopped by his teammate.
The Pelicans were playing at home and were certainly looking to keep their season going. In the last quarter, the visitors trailed by just one point as the game was evenly poised. As OKC Thunder looked to advance and take the lead, Richardson jammed his elbow below Giddey’s groin in a rather nasty blow. While referees called out a foul, it was imperative to check whether the action was flagrant.
The referees reviewed the play and charged Richardson with a Penalty One Flagrant Foul. After Josh Giddey tried to go after Richardson the two engaged in a verbal scuffle. While the referees and both teams kept them away from each other, things got visibly heated. Giddey, who was understandably upset with the foul play was saying, “Don’t do that bulls**t again.”
The Pelicans who were leading 100-101 had to give up two free throws to the Thunder and an inbound throw-in. As the game progressed, the young Oklahoma team took the lead to win the game 123-118 and advanced to the next round of the Play-In tournament.
What is the road ahead for Oklahoma City Thunder?
The OKC Thunder live to see another day in the 2022-23 NBA season. After eliminating the Pelicans in an exciting matchup, the Thunder will now travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Their next game comes against the Minnesota Timberwolves. This will be the doorstep to clinch the eighth seed in the Western Conference as well as tread into the NBA playoffs.
The Timberwolves, who lost to the Los Angeles Lakers will look to make the most out of this opportunity. The winner of the eighth seed will then take on the toppers of the West, the mighty Denver Nuggets. A seven-game series that would most certainly put their skills to the test. While the Thunder has shown some brilliant resilience to make it thus far in the tournament, their road ahead is likely to get more treacherous. With Rudy Gobert expected to walk into the lineup after a one-game suspension, the Thunder must bring their A-game to the party if they want that victory against a strong Timberwolves lineup.
