The New York Knicks are one loss away from being eliminated from the playoffs after falling 109-101 to the Miami Heat on Monday night. The Heat now lead the series 3-1 and have a chance to close it out in Game 5 on Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.
The Knicks have been unable to match the Heat’s firepower and defense in this series, and their biggest disappointment has been their star player Julius Randle, who was once named the NBA’s Most Improved Player. Randle had a breakout year, averaging 25.1 points, 10 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game and leading the Knicks to the postseason.
But in this series, Randle has been a non-factor, averaging just 17.5 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 assists per game on a dismal 35.5% shooting from the field and 33.3% from the three-point range. He has also committed seven turnovers and even got fouled out in today’s game. Randle had 20 points tonight on 8-of-13 shooting from the field and 1-of-4 from beyond the arc.
The Heat have done an excellent job of containing Randle and making him uncomfortable on offense. They have often sent double-teams or helped defenders to crowd his space and force him into tough shots or turnovers. They have also challenged his shots well and prevented him from getting to his favorite spots on the floor.
Knicks fans turn on Julius Randle after another dismal showing in Game 4 loss
Randle’s poor performance has not gone unnoticed by the Knicks fans, who have expressed their frustration and anger with him on social media. Some fans have even suggested that the Knicks should trade Randle or let him walk in free agency whenever he becomes a free agent. Here are some reactions from Twitter:
The Knicks will need a miracle to overcome a 3-1 deficit against the Heat, who have been dominant in this series behind Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo. The Knicks will need Randle to bounce back and play like an All-Star in Game 5 if they want to extend their season and give their fans something to cheer about.
Otherwise, they will face a long offseason of questions and doubts about their future and Randle’s role in it.
