Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Will Smith slapping Chris Rock

Will Smith was slammed by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who listed the negative effects of the actor’s violent outburst during the Oscar presentation as spreading “stereotypes about the Black community,” harming show business, and endangering comedians. After Chris Rock‘s comments during the Oscars, Smith slapped Rock live on television. The NBA community also responded to this, with players like Stephen Curry and Kareem sharing their perspectives.

Chris Rock made fun of Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head when presenting an award at the Oscars in March, saying he couldn’t wait for Jada to feature in “G.I. Jane 2.” Since 2018, Pinkett Smith has experienced significant hair loss due to alopecia. Will Smith first appeared to be amused by the joke, but then stood up and slapped Rock in the face while he was standing on stage. Smith sat back down and said to keep his wife’s name out of his mouth twice while Rock looked to be in disbelief.

What happened at the Oscars?

Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith’s husband and the 2022 Best Actor Oscar winner, smacked Chris Rock on the Academy Awards stage. Chris made a really offensive remark about Jada’s alopecia during his presentation speech. It was a reference to Demi Moore’s buzzcut in the 1997 movie GI Jane, in which she played the main character, GI Jane which resulted in Smith entering the stage after the joke and slapping Chris. The event has split the world, but the Academy Awards were unambiguous about their position. On March 30, the Academy’s board of governors announced that they had started “disciplinary processes” against Will for breaking the organization’s norms of behavior.

The tennis movie “King Richard” awarded Will Smith the Oscar for best actor for his depiction of Venus and Serena Williams’ father Richard. After becoming viral for the incident that took place, the 53-year-old man won the award only moments later. In his speech, Smith made mention to the incident, and he later apologized to the Academy before thanking the Williams family. After returning a little while later to receive his very first Academy Award, Smith apologized profusely. “At your highest moment, be careful because that’s when the devil comes for you,” Denzel Washington had already advised Smith, he mentioned.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s comments on the Will Smith incident

In September,  Abdul-Jabbar started his reader-supported Substack account. Since then, he has been writing often, including a scathing review of Smith that implies the “King Richard” actor’s poor behavior wasn’t all that far down the tree. The legendary player for the Los Angeles Lakers further criticized Smith by citing examples of famous people like Beyonce and Dwayne Johnson. He claimed that Smith’s “fall from grace” was comparable to an asteroid hitting the Black community.

Will Smith apologized in a touching video four months after the incident where he pleaded for forgiveness and understanding. Undoubtedly, a lot of people wonder if the apology is a genuine show of regret or if it is a last-ditch effort to save a collapsing career. Smith is an extraordinarily gifted actor and because of this, some people could assume he’s just being sorry and apologetic in the video. Critics will also point out that it feels more like commerce than conscience to take four months to answer. Following the Oscars, Smith’s popularity fell and a number of his movie projects were cancelled or delayed.
