Following a flood of criticism from other social media users, Edwards withdrew the video and attempted to limit the damage by apologizing. The Timberwolves also made an effort to mitigate the public relations harm caused by Edwards’ provocative statements. In terms of the NBA‘s proceedings, no decision has been made, however, it is fairly probable that Edwards will be penalized. Despite Edwards’ efforts, his comments ring hollow with Abdul-Jabbar, who has worked for decades to raise societal awareness on key issues.

Minnesota Timberwolves joined the long list of condemners who have expressed their displeasure with Anthony Edwards after the NBA player uploaded a homophobic video on Instagram. While he later erased the video, his fans saved it and published it on social media. He has since issued an apology on the same on twitter saying “What I said was immature, hurtful, and disrespectful, and I’m incredibly sorry,” he wrote. “It’s unacceptable for me or anyone to use that language in such a hurtful way, there’s no excuse for it, at all. I was raised better than that!” In addition, Timberwolves president Tim Connelly issued a statement denouncing Edwards’ behaviour.

The criticism however appears to be far from over as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar also spoke out against Anthony Edwards’ homophobic remarks. Speaking on his side of the story, Jabbar stated: “It would be easy to dismiss Edwards’ immaturity—he’s only 21—if not for the fact that we’ve seen so many cases of famous athletes and owners in the news spouting racism, misogyny, and anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments.

He further added “This damages sports in general and their teams specifically, and revives the old stereotype of the dumb, bullying jock. But more important, it perpetuates prejudice against a group and that prejudice often leads to restricting rights and to violence. I don’t think an apology—however heartfelt—is enough. Edwards needs to repair the damage with some voluntary community service with LGBTQ+ organizations, particularly youth groups, to show his support. If he can’t do that much to undo the harm he’s caused, then his apology is meaningless.”
