When well-known Philadelphia rapper PnB Rock was killed at a restaurant, the city of Los Angeles was the victim of yet another horrible crime. Kareem Abdul Jabbar, a legend of the Lakers, had a message for society during these trying times. Notably, he made it quite apparent that he opposed all forms of violence.
Basketball legend Kareem Abdul Jabbar is recognized as one of the greatest ever. The renowned Los Angeles Lakers player was a giant throughout his playing career. Kareem invented the skyhook, an unstoppable shot that has grown to be one of sports’ most deadly techniques. Kareem has also continuously been at the forefront of social justice issues throughout his whole career and beyond. Kareem is never afraid to voice his beliefs, whether they are on the Vietnam War, the Black Lives Matter protest, or the recent passing of the famous rapper.
Kareem Abdul Jabbar- The indestructible NBA giant
Perhaps the most accomplished player in NBA history is Kareem Abdul Jabbar. He won six titles, two NBA Finals MVP trophies, and six MVP awards. His hallmark shot, the “sky hook,” still holds the record for most points scored in a regular season career and was a consistent player in the league. He was selected first overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in 1969 after being named the best player in the NCAA Tournament in 1967, 1968, and 1969. Abdul Jabbar retired from basketball in 1989 as the league’s all-time leading scorer, having amassed 38,387 points, 17,440 rebounds, 3,189 blocks, and 1,560 games played.
Abdul Jabbar was the model of a trusted and reliable double-digit scorer. Throughout his playing career, he scored at least 10 points in every game, and at the time the streak ended, he had 787 straight games with at least 10 points. The NBA created the Kareem Abdul Jabbar Social Justice Award on May 13, 2021, with the goal of honoring a current NBA player for their commitment to social justice initiatives. As a result of his achievements, he was elected to the NBA 50th and 75th anniversary teams as well as the Naismith Hall of Fame.

Kareem has been a social activist for many years and has never backed down from expressing his opinions. According to the 58-year-old, a movement that first aimed to prohibit violence is now encouraging its usage. Likewise, the NBA’s all-time top scorer was drawn to several strong messages. Kareem used Twitter to deliver a basic yet clear statement. “Education is cool. Violence & drugs are for fools.”
Since 2018, gun violence has caused substantial losses in the hip-hop community. Significantly, at least one rap musician has passed away as a result of the cause since 2018. Many basketball players expressed their sorrow for the passing of many basketball-loving local artists, but it appears that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has had enough. The hip-hop scene is arguably in trouble after losing so many important figures. We can only hope that PnB Rock’s passing will spark a movement for change.
