On May 14, a young individual wearing military gear opened fire in a local supermarket in Buffalo, New York. Mass shootings have become exceedingly common in American neighborhoods making the space extremely unsafe for families and several other natives. This has not been the only mass shooting incident that took place within the month of May, last week, Milwaukee had also suffered a terrible event like this but thankfully no lives were lost.
The suspect was an 18-year-old male, Payton Gendron, who claims that this was a federal hate crime caused by racial extremism. The teenager allegedly streamed the shooting on Twitch before being cut off from transmission. Virtual witnesses gathered screenshots of the incident which showed that Gendron carried a rifle while starting firing in the parking lot of a Tops Friendly Market.
President Joe Biden speaks out against white supremacy
The fatal shootings in Buffalo left 3 injured and had 10 unfortunate deaths. All deaths were reportedly black people which hinted that this may have been a result of racial discrimination. Obviously, this did not sit well with the entire nation and President Joe Biden could not help but address the nation over the violent act.
The President described the suspect as a member of, “a hateful minority.” He further said, “Individual lives of love, service, and community that speak to the bigger story of who we are as Americans. White supremacy will not have the last word.” He also said, “Hate and fear have been given too much oxygen by those who pretend to love America but don’t understand America. I call on all Americans to reject the lie and I condemn those who spread the lie of power, political gain, and profit. We cannot remain silent.”
