With the NBA Finals nearing an end and the offseason about to kick in, the trade rumor mill has been brewing. And according to reports, Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl Anthony-Towns may not be a Timberwolf for much longer. According to Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus, the All-Star center is unlikely to play out his contract in Minnesota, which runs through the 2024-25 season. Several teams have already expressed interest in trading for Towns, who is one of the best offensive bigs in the NBA.
The Timberwolves are facing a financial crunch that could force them to move Towns. They have to decide whether to pay the luxury tax to keep their young core of Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels, who are both due for big paydays soon.
Edwards will be eligible for a max extension next summer. McDaniels, who showed flashes of being a two-way threat, is looking for a contract worth $25 million to $30 million per year, per Pincus. That would put the Timberwolves in a bind, as they already have $77 million tied up in Towns and Rudy Gobert for next season.
Gobert, the three-time Defensive Player of the Year, was acquired from the Utah Jazz in a massive trade that cost the Timberwolves five players and five future first-round picks. But his presence has not translated into wins for Minnesota, nor has it improved Towns’ production. Towns averaged 20.8 points and 8.1 rebounds per game this season.

NBA fans on Twitter had mixed reactions to the rumor of Towns being on the trade block, with some excited about the possibility of seeing him on a contender, while others criticizing the Timberwolves for their poor management.
Here are some of the best tweets:
One of the teams that could make a move for Towns is the Houston Rockets, who are reportedly interested in bringing back James Harden, who forced his way out of Houston.
Other teams that could pursue Towns include the Boston Celtics, who could use his scoring and rebounding next to their young wings, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Or the Miami Heat, who could form a formidable trio with Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo, or the Golden State Warriors, who could add him to their championship core of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green.
It’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for the talented big man.
