NBA to bring in new load management policy to prevent star players from missing too many games.

Kawhi Leonard’s load management habit in TROUBLE as NBA makes move to force team to play star players

NBA superstars have increasingly begun to adopt load management, the practice of frequently resting star players. This has infuriated fans across the globe. Among the stars, Kawhi Leonard has been one of the primary recipients of this backlash, considering he played only 52 of the 82 regular season games last year. Consequently, the NBA is working on bringing about a new policy to prevent situations like these.

To curb these practices, the NBA is attempting to bring about a rule that states that a team will not be able to rest two of its star players in a single game. This means if, for example, the Clippers choose to rest both Kawhi Leonard and Paul George in the same game, it could lead to repercussions. The NBA Board of Governors will vote on the policy this week. If finalized, it will change the way NBA superstars schedule their games.

According to Shams Charania’s sources, a star player will be defined as, “someone who’s made an All-Star or All-NBA team in the past three seasons” . (Shams Charania is a sports reporter working for The Athletic).

For this reason, the rule could be enforced on a player like Kawhi, who was All-NBA First Team in 2021 and NBA All-Star in 2020 & 2021. Indeed, since his teammate Paul George was also an All-Star in 2021, the Clippers would be unable to rest both of them in the same game.

How does Kawhi Leonard’s load management affect fans?

When a star like Kawhi frequently misses games, it robs fans of the opportunity to see him perform on-court. This frustrates fans, especially when they’ve paid money to see him live, only to find out he is not playing. Additionally, many fans believe it reduces the competitiveness of the sport since the best players of both teams are often not on the court.

If fans believe that the sports’ competitiveness is declining, it could mean a loss in viewership for the NBA. This would bring down business, and as a result, revenue as well. It is perhaps these factors that have prompted the NBA to bring about a policy change. Fans have become bored with their favorite players not playing, so regardless of whether it happens now or later, a policy curbing load management is bound to be implemented.
