“We learn new things about ourselves” Kendrick Nunn highlights Media Biasness citing injury rehab
Kendrick Nunn
When he returns to the court in 2022-23, Kendrick Nunn could be one of the most important roster additions for the Los Angeles Lakers. Nunn missed the entire season last year due to a bone bruise in his knee, despite being expected to miss only three weeks. Several weeks ago, the 27-year-old stated that he felt healthy and that Lakers fans could expect consistency from him during the upcoming training camp.
However, reports in early August stated that Nunn had not yet participated in five-on-five play, implying that the former Miami Heat combo guard is still recovering from his injury. However, on the latest Hoops Hype Podcast, The Athletics’ Jovan Buha told Hoops Hype’s Michael Scott that, while Nunn has been ramping up his shooting drills and working out around the Lakers’ El Segundo practise facilities, his progress has been “slower than anticipated.”
Kendrick Nunn, on the other hand, quickly refuted the report, tweeting a response that should make Lakers fans exhale a collective sigh of relief. Nunn responded to a Lakers Nation article about Buha’s comments on Twitter, saying, “You learn new things about yourself every day on social media, that’s why I barely be on here.”
Kendrick Nunn’s past season with the Lakers
When he signed a two-year, $10.25 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2021-22, 6’2″ combo guard Kendrick Nunn was expected to play a significant role. After all, he was one of only five Lakers to sign a contract worth more than the league minimum. Aside from the team’s “Big Three” of LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and (oof) Russell Westbrook, the only other Laker earning more than the minimum wage was the now-departed Talen Horton-Tucker. Unfortunately, a bone bruise suffered in the preseason forced him to miss the entire season.
Kendrick Nunn is a relatively unknown resource this year. If he stays healthy, he could be a valuable scorer and shooter off the bench, rounding out Los Angeles’ backcourt rotation behind likely starting point guard Patrick Beverley (sorry, Russ) and, for the time being, either Lonnie Walker IV or Austin Reaves as the starting shooting guard. Nunn’s potential return piqued the interest of team owner Jeanie Buss, who mentioned him in the same breath as LeBron James and Anthony Davis while completely ignoring Westbrook in a recent interview. To be fair, Buss stated in a second, even more recent interview that Westbrook was the “best” player on the team last season, before her interviewer effectively talked her out of it.
Nunn has averaged 15.0 points, three assists, and 2.9 rebounds in 123 healthy career games with the Heat, for a slash line of 458/.364/.881. Nunn, a three-point shooter with handle, can be a valuable reserve point guard and break-glass-in-case-of-emergency starter when Beverley, 34, misses his usual 20ish games.
Kendrick Nunn’s spot in the team’s guard rotation could be jeopardised if he isn’t ready for the preseason this year. That is contingent on a few factors, including Russell Westbrook’s fate and what might return to Los Angeles in a trade for the former All-Star. Nunn’s L.A. tenure continues to be a rocky one. Let’s hope that when he returns to the court, he can be an impact player for a team in desperate need of outside shooting help and passing touch.
