Kevin Durant is not one to shy away from confrontation, especially when it comes to his basketball legacy. The Phoenix Suns forward joined a Twitter Space on Friday night titled “Kevin Durant is not top 5” to challenge some of his detractors.
The host of the space, @LegendOfWinning, is a notorious KD hater, but he had no choice but to concede to the NBA star’s arguments. Durant dismissed the idea of ranking players based on team success and said that individual talent should be the main criterion.
“I just think how ya’ll even look at the game is whack as f—,” Durant said. “Playoff success, you factor in team success when you talk about players. I just think how ya’ll consume the game is trash. Like, are you good or not?“
He continued, “Some things can be that simple. Are you just good or not? A lot of people have seen it for a long time, brother. And it’s okay. These lists don’t really mean anything, anyway. So why are you getting so upset about it?”
The conversation ended shortly after that, but Durant was not done defending himself online.
Kevin Durant calls out jealous haters on Twitter
Durant continued answering trolls online, writing that the NBA fanbase is currently in shambles. He defended his accomplishments and clapped back at his critics, saying they were “jealous of the real players” and lacked any talent of their own.
“Dudes who don’t even come close to being good at anything be jealous of the real players,” Durant tweeted. “Sh*t be funny and sad at the same time.“
Durant averaged 27.3 points, 7.1 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game in his career and has won two Finals MVP awards. He led the Suns to a 45-37 record in the Western Conference last season.
His participation in the live chat drew the attention of Trae Young, who tweeted some laughing emojis in response. Durant is no stranger to engaging with haters on social media, but this was the first time he jumped into a public discussion about his legacy.
