“I know when it’s passing of the guard…” Kevin Durant highly praises Celtics’ Jayson Tatum to ‘control league for 12 years’
A championship is all that is left for JT to have in the best season of his career.
Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics are cruising through the regular season as the best team in the league. So far, Tatum and Jaylen Brown have been leading the team, being the dynamic duo. Out of the two, Tatum has the pathway to become the league MVP.
The 26-year-old has been one of the top scorers in the league for years, but only this time his team is the favorites to win the title.
His performance has improved not only individually but also around his teammates. Watching him become such a threat, Kevin Durant expressed his predictions about Tatum being an MVP himself. Both athletes play the same position, and as seen from Tatum, his career so far has followed in Durant’s footsteps.
I've been in this league a long time now and I know when it's a passing of the guard. I know when the young dudes are going to come in and do the same thing the older guys are doing. So, he's one of the guys, I feel like is gonna control the league for the next 10-12 years.Said Durant.
Tatum shows glimpses of Durant when he was in OKC. KD is a former MVP himself, and when the Slim Reaper says a younger player is going to be the next face of the league, fans ought to believe so. JT’s numbers are nothing short of MVP-like averages over the past two years. This is the third season where Tatum is giving his all while his team is also the best in the league.
Jayson Tatum is a tough competitor for the MVP award
Tatum’s case of MVP is quite strong but might not be as strong as others. The list includes two-time MVP Nikola Jokic, OKC’s Shai-Gilgeous Alexander, former MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Luka Doncic. Out of all these players, Tatum would only stand atop if he wins the title or if the Celtics reach the Finals. Players like Luka Doncic might face trouble with the Mavs in the postseason.
The same would be the case for SGA, though the two big men, the Greek Freak and the Joker, have a pretty good chance at another MVP title. Boston’s big three—Tatum, Brown, and Kristaps Porzingis—are the key to winning the championship.
Jrue Holiday has also been quite productive, being an excellent shooter from deep. The Celtics have a great chance at winning their first title in 16 years with the stacked squad that they’ve built.
Tatum has been averaging 27 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game while shooting over 47% from the field and 37% from deep. JT has it all covered to make a case for his first MVP season, with the only thing left being Boston’s postseason run.
With that being said, it will be interesting to see the Celtics this postseason, having aligned a perfect roster after years.
