“SHUT YO A** UP!” Kevin Garnett gives an uncanny impersonation of 9x All-Star and CONTROLLER Gary Payton
Kevin Garnett
It’s no secret that Kevin Garnett is one of the most entertaining players in NBA history. Not only was he a fierce competitor on the court, but his outrageous personality has made him a fan favorite off it as well. In a recent Instagram Live session with Gary Payton, Garnett gave an uncanny impersonation of the 9x All-Star and “controller” that had fans in stitches. From his famous catchphrases to his trademark scowl, Garnett nailed every aspect of Payton’s persona.
The Miami Heat champion was known as one of the greatest trash-talkers in basketball history. His ability to verbally outdo his opponents was legendary, and he was unafraid to use it to get into the heads of his opponents. As Kevin Garnett famously said in an episode of the ‘All The Smoke’ podcast, “I saw Gary Payton control the referees, his coach, my coach, the crowd, the lady in the front. The guy who was on the side of the Minnesota games set the buffet. He would control the whole game.”
He later described watching Payton’s mastery. He said, “I watched GP back down the guard from baseline to baseline, talking the whole time, ‘Shut yo a** up!’, ‘4 up twist!’, ‘Get his a** in here!’, ‘Ay, you see the hand on the hip, call it if you see it (to the referees).’ GP to me was like masterful.” Though Kevin Garnett went on to become a formidable trash-talker himself in the years to come, nobody could match Gary Payton’s volume of trash talk. He was unrivaled in his ability to dominate a game both on and off the court.
As NBA fans, we all want Kevin Garnett to go on more podcasts. His incredible storytelling ability gives us an entertaining inside look into the NBA from a Hall of Famer’s perspective.
Kevin Garnett praises Tim Duncan for his trash talk abilities
In the same interview, Garnett named another perhaps unlikely candidate amongst his best trash talkers. KG talked about Tim Duncan’s unusual method of trash-talking. The former MVP said “Timmy would hit you in phrases, ‘Got you.’ ‘Oooh. Almost.’ This the worst right here: ‘Nice try.’ Like subtle s***. No gangster s***. No real hardcore s***. Just subtle ways to back your ass up and put back in like this over here.“
Garnett further went on to say that what really ticked him off was not being able to get to the Spurs legend with trash talk. “And then, what really, what really, what really, really, really pissed me off was when the trash talk wasn’t affecting him,” KG added.“So now you spending all this energy trying to rile this up, you forgot about your own game… and that’s actually when I quit talking trash to Timmy.”
Tim Duncan is someone who usually comes across as someone who wouldn’t be a trash talker. We see here that Timmy beat one of the greatest trash talkers at his own game.
