The charges against Houston Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr. may have more significant consequences than he had anticipated. For context, Porter Jr. is charged with assault and strangulation of a woman after being arrested for assaulting his girlfriend, WNBA player Kysre Gondrezick.
According to reports, the police received a 911 call at 6:30 a.m. from the Millennium Hilton Hotel in Midtown, New York. Upon arriving at the hotel, they found Kysre with a cut on her face. According to a police statement, Porter hit Kysre multiple times, resulting in at least a broken bone and bruises around her neck.
This isn’t the first time KPJ has encountered legal trouble; he was previously charged with mishandling a firearm while with the Cavaliers in 2020. He was also traded away from the Cavaliers in 2021 after becoming angry when his locker was moved near younger players. If found guilty of the current charges, the consequences for Porter Jr. could be much more severe than he expects.
NBA Twitter demands for Kevin Porter Jr. to be locked up for his crime
NBA Twitter has been consistently critical when players go out of line and commit crimes. Fans criticized Ja Morant for flashing his gun and also bashed both the Charlotte Hornets and Miles Bridges after he was reinstated with the Hornets following his domestic violence conviction. So, when news of KPJ’s incident became public, fans demanded that he be locked up.
Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:
Porter Jr. has been charged with two felonies, and if he is convicted at his court hearing, which is set to be held on September 13th, it could mean significant jail time for him. If this happens, it would have a major impact on his basketball career, as he signed an $82.5 million deal with the Rockets last year. If he is charged and convicted, he could be waived and receive $16.9 million from his substantial contract.
