Two Western Conference teams that have had success in 2023 include the Oklahoma City Thunder and Sacramento Kings. Thus, it was only logical that the contest between the two teams would be very intense. In a close game, the Kings prevailed 118–113. Keegan Murray, a rookie, had his greatest game of basketball yet, tallying a career-high 29 points and 14 rebounds. The No. 4 choice in the last year’s NBA draft has established himself as a 3-point shooter halfway into his rookie campaign.

However coach Mike Brown has pleaded with him to play with greater confidence, especially when it comes to attacking the rim. If Murray’s last two games are any evidence, he may be turning the corner and improving his all-around game, which may be essential for the No. 3 seed Kings in the Western Conference to have staying power.

Speaking on his performance against the Thunder, Brown said, “I’m not gonna lie he surprised me in a couple of areas. He’s been driving to the rim. For him to decide to drive to the rim to be showing he’s tall enough, he’s strong enough, and athletic enough. He’s had enough of me calling him out. He had a couple of moves that I’m impressed with. I can’t go back to watch him on tape because I absolutely loved his aggressiveness”

It was a high-scoring game, but in the second half, the Thunder’s attack began to crumble. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, a possible All-Star for the Thunder, fortunately, put together a strong stretch, that kept the Thunder in the game.

Mike Brown continued praising Murray in the post-game conference he said, “He (Murray) is more than capable. I’m glad that he’s starting to show a little bit of what he can do… I love his confidence too, slapped him five after the game like five or six times. I said ‘your s–t Keegan Murray.’ You know what he said? He goes ‘I got a little wiggle.’ I was like ‘keep doing the wiggle! Whatever wiggle is keep doing it!’”

Naturally, Murray is one of the more reserved members of the Kings, and his teammates frequently encourage the 22-year-old Iowan to open up and show some personality. And, he has finally started to do so but in a much more unexpected and hilarious way.

Murray is averaging more over 12 points per game for the Kings through 42 games. He is making 41.5 percent of his shots from outside the arc and just under 45 percent from the field. Murray has contributed to Sacramento’s overall success in 2022–2023.
