Julius Randle learned a lot from Kobe Bryant during his two-year stint with the Lakers legend, including his unmatched work ethic and competitive drive. Bryant did not accept any excuses or lack of effort from his teammates, and he always pushed them to elevate their game.

Randle shared some of his memories of playing with Bryant on the Podcast P with Paul George, and one of them involved a delayed flight trip. Randle said that the Lakers were ready to board the plane, but they had to wait for about an hour because Bryant was nowhere to be seen. The team was getting restless and sarcastic, wondering what was keeping him.

We were waiting on the plane, it was like an hour… plane ain’t leaving without Kobe [Bryant],” said Randle. “We being sarcastic like ‘heey! Kobe welcome!’ and he was like ‘man, ya’ll m*****f*****s better be glad I’m here.’

According to Randle, Bryant’s reaction was both hilarious and intimidating. He said that Bryant had a way of commanding respect and attention from his teammates, and he always set the standard for the team.

Randle also revealed another story about Bryant that illustrated his competitive fire and love for the game. He said that in his rookie season, he was sidelined with an injury for most of the year. He was in the training room when he heard Bryant unleashing his fury on his teammates during practice.

“I’m in the training room,” Randle said. “I’m getting my rehab and stuff, and all I hear is, ‘Soft as Charmin. Y’all motherf*****s trash.’ Kobe got a deep a** voice, so you hear it, and he just going back and forth. I hear Nick (Young), ‘You can’t guard me.’

In 2015, Julius Randle returned to the court for the Lakers after missing most of his rookie season with an injury. Coincidentally, Kevin Garnett was also back with the Timberwolves, playing his final season as well.

Early in the season, the Lakers and Wolves faced off, and KG and Randle got into a heated exchange. The Big Ticket was known for his trash talk and intimidation tactics, but Randle didn’t back down and stood up for himself and his team in front of Kobe. The Lakers legend praised Randle’s competitiveness and said he was glad to see him fight for his team.

“He responded like Julius Randle. … He’s not intimidated by anybody,” said Kobe.
