Kobe Bryant was some of the very first players to recognize the greats of Stephen Curry. The Golden State Warriors franchise player today is the greatest shooter of all-time and undoubtedly one of the best point guards to ever be in the business. But early in his career, many doubted him and he has successfully outlived their expectations. Kobe Bryant, though, was able to recognize Steph’s untapped potential in his rookie year itself.
Curry recently appeared on First We Feast’s “Hot Ones”. There while surviving the heat from the spicy wings the former FMVP went on to discuss the several moments when he received a compliment from Kobe Bryant. The interviewer asked Curry about his feelings on knowing Kobe validated him and the killer instinct behind his baby face way before he started making noise in the league.
Curry went on to detail the exact moment when he gained Kobe Bryant’s respect. Reflecting upon one of their very early preseason matchups Curry remembered how the ‘Black Mamba’ was locked-in while defending him as he was pressing the rook full court.
Curry talking about that moment said, “So he stays with me like four or five slides and then he bumps me. I kinda like fall off. So I am actually tired and he’s just going you know. So after I fall I got no option. I am like I’m just gonna shoot it and live with it. I shot it from probably 30 feet and I made it and acted like nothing happened. So it’s like the biggest keep you cool kinda moment. He gave me like a little a** tap on the way back and I couldn’t even acknowledge it either. I acted like I was playing defense.”
Furthermore, Stephen Curry even mentioned how he had rushed to get that video during halftime after hiding his real emotions throughout the whole ordeal. Black Mamba really recognized the hidden toughness which existed in Stephen all the time.
Stephen Curry received Kobe Bryant’s validation in his rookie year itself

It took only one good appearance for Kobe Bryant to recognize the killer instinct in Stephen Curry. In the same interview, talking about receiving validation from Kobe, Curry said, “It’s my rookie year and we were playing Lakers at home. He’s on the bench and we are getting beat at that time. But I come down to court and but do a little pump fake, the situation hit, and a leaner off the glass. And, as I run on the court the camera locks in on him. Leans to the guy sitting next to him and kind of mouths like he’s nice.”
Getting validation from prime Kobe Bryant himself is really the dopest thing in the world one can imagine. When many were doubting him, his ankles, and consistency, Black Mamba just knew Curry’s going to battle out all those allegations and be great. Later in their career, both legends even developed a friendly relationship full of respect between them.
