Derrick Rose was a non-factor this season for the Knicks

Derrick Rose was used sparingly last season by Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau and eventually found himself out of the team’s rotation. The Knicks recently announced that they have declined Rose’s $15.6 million team option making him an unrestricted free agent. It’s being reported that the Lakers, Suns, Celtics and Bulls are expected to have interest in Rose. Los Angeles Lakers fans, in particular, are keen to have Rose don the purple and gold and play for Lakers.

When you think of some of the biggest ‘what if’ stories in the NBA, Derrick Rose is one of the first names that comes to mind. Rose was drafted as the number 1 overall pick back in the 2008 NBA draft by his hometown team, the Chicago Bulls. Rose took the league by storm and quickly became one of the best players in the game with his incredible speed and athleticism, something that was rarely seen at the point guard position.

In 2011, at the age of 22, Rose became the youngest player ever to win the NBA Most Valuable Player Award after having averages of 25.0 points, 7.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds and leading the Bulls to a 62-20 record in the regular season. Rose had everything going for him be it the jaw-dropping athleticism, the love he received across the league, endorsement deals and so much more until it all came crashing down on that fateful night in Chicago in Game 1 of the 2012 first-round playoff series between the Bulls and the Philadelphia 76ers. Rose tore his ACL in the closing minutes of the game and such was the impact of the injury that Rose was never the same player again.

Could Rose and James become teammates once again?

After recovering from the ACL injury, Rose suffered another major setback when he tore his meniscus in his right knee in a game against the Portland Trailblazers in 2013. From then on Rose could never be relied upon to be healthy consistently as he became injury prone and a liability for any team to have. Rose would be traded multiple times, going from the Bulls to the New York Knicks (2016-2017), followed by trades to the Cleveland Cavaliers (2017-2018), Minnesota Timberwolves (2018-2019), Detroit Pistons (2019-2021) and back to the Knicks (2021-present) again.

A lot of fans are rooting for Rose to win a championship after all he has been through. Laker nation seems to be the most excited, with fans calling for Rose to be signed and paired with LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Here are some reactions to the trade rumours:

Regardless of where Rose ends up playing finally, the hope is that the former MVP can contribute effectively and stay healthy most importantly. At 34, Rose isn’t getting any younger and the only thing that he would want before he hangs up his boots, is to win that coveted NBA Championship, he surely deserves one.
