“Just recognize I can die” Lakers former two-time champion auctions off his NBA Finals ring in order to help Ukraine
If there is one Lakers’ player, active or former, who truly understands the pain Ukraine is going through, it is Slava Medvedenko. The two-time NBA champions with Lakers in 2001 and 2002, announced that he is auctioning off his championship rings in order to support his country amid battle with Russia.
During the Los Angeles Lakers successive three-peat, Slava Medvedenko joined Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal’s team to win their second and third title in the successive years, beating Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Jets. The rings will be auctioned off by one of the world leaders in sports memorabilia auctions, SCP Auctions. The earnings of this auction will directly be given to Medvedenko’s charitable trust- Fly High Foundation.

Slava Medvedenko’s Sky-High Foundation supports Ukrainian children by creating infrastructure for schools and athletics. The former Laker informed the Associated Press by phone his decision.
“We want to restore gyms because the Russian army bombed more than a hundred schools… Our country, they need a lot of money to fix the schools. Sports gyms are going to be last in the line to fix it. In Ukraine, we have winter and kids need to play inside,” the former Lakers forward said.
“Why do I need these rings if they’re just sitting in my safe?’” Medvedenko said. “I just recognize I can die. After that, I just say I have to sell them to show people leadership, to help my Ukrainian people to live better, to help kids.”
The courage shown by the Ukrainians will always be remembered in the hearts of everyone in the world. Having fought the invasion by Russia for over five months now, will we ever see the European country be at peace? Hopefully everyone, just like Slava is hoping for the same. That being said, the Ukrainian will and resolve as a people has shown an unbelievable amount of courage to the rest of the world. Medvedenko is clearly doing his part.
