LeBron James is set to achieve another milestone in his illustrious basketball career as the Los Angeles Lakers organization plans to retire his jersey, further adding to his already impressive list of accomplishments. The confirmation came directly from Jeanie Buss, the president of the Lakers, during a recent interview. The momentous event will see LeBron’s iconic number grace the rafters of the Crypto arena.
As the Lakers gear up for the upcoming season, uncertainty looms over their title hopes, as Jeanie Buss candidly acknowledged. Despite the uncertainties, one undeniable truth remains unshakable – James will undoubtedly have his jersey immortalized alongside the Lakers’ greatest legends.
Jeanie Buss, while addressing James’ jersey retirement rumors, said, “I have absolutely no doubt that LeBron will make it into the Basketball Hall-of-Fame. When he does so, then we will retire his jersey.” The 61-year-old added, “Knowing that he will make it into the Basketball Hall-of-Fame, he will have his Lakers jersey retired. No doubt about it.”
LeBron James will join the likes of his former teammates Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal in the rafters. Lakers fans’ belief in James’ legacy is well-founded, considering his already monumental achievements with the team. The 6-foot-8 forward delivered a long-awaited championship to the city in 2020. Moreover, LeBron etched his name in history by shattering the league’s all-Time scoring record, a feat that had been held by the legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for decades
If James does get his jersey retired by the Lakers, he will be inducted into an incredibly exclusive group of only two players in NBA history. This rarefied air is reserved for individuals whose jerseys have been retired by three different organizations. The first among them was the iconic Wilt Chamberlain, whose number 13 jersey was retired not only by the Lakers but also by the 76ers and the Warriors. The second member of this esteemed club is the legendary Pete Maravich, whose jersey number 44 was retired by the Hawks and 7 was retired by the Jazz and Pelicans.
When questioned about the possibility of retiring LeBron James’ jersey number as 6 or 23, or even considering both, Jeanie Buss offered a measured response, saying, “That’s a discussion for another time.”

LeBron James to switch back to his Jersey no. 23 for the 2023-24 season

Questions have been floating around as to why LeBron James decided to switch back to his previous Lakers jersey number. Shortly after the season ended, James announced that he would be donning the No. 23 again as a gesture to show his respect for the late Bill Russell, who wore the No. 6 with the Boston Celtics.
James had previously worn the No.23 jersey in his first four seasons with the team during 2017-2020 and won the Laker’s 17th title with the No.23. It was only two seasons ago that James switched to the No.6 (2020-23). Jeanie Buss has not given a definitive answer about retiring James’ two jerseys, but it is pretty clear that the No.23 will be the one up in the rafters.
LeBron James recently announced that he will be returning to the Lakers for year 21 of his career. Given the Laker’s new roster improvements, James and the team have a clear shot of winning another championship for Los Angeles.
