This off-season has been tremendously entertaining to watch. There have been blockbuster signings and record-breaking contracts being negotiated. Every day, a new announcement is made. A team to watch that had made a surprising appearance in the Western Conference Finals is the Los Angeles Lakers. They signed fan favorite Austin Reaves to a $53.8 million, 4-year deal. Along with this, the Lakers re-signed Rui Hachimura and D’Angelo Russell. Trade rumors are abuzz around the league, with free agents still waiting to be signed. Among these rumors is Trae Young, the star point guard for the Atlanta Hawks.

Young is currently tied up to the Hawks with a hefty 5-year, $215 million deal, which would surely demolish the cap space of the Lakers if acquired. Not surprisingly, a lot of NBA analysts and media personalities chimed in on the possible signing. Among the analysts was infamous “Undisputed Live” host Skip Bayless.

Commenting on his distaste for the trade, Bayless stated, “I’d like to go to dinner with him, but I would not want him on my basketball team. They call him, as you know, “Ice Trae,” and I call him “Mice Trae cause he’s so little.” Bayless further added, “It’s like Westbrook; since he came into the league, he’s been a liability on defense because he’s just too little.”

Bayless further dug into Young, talking about how his stats were an extreme liability for any squad, as he only shoots 33.3% despite being known as a sharpshooter. Bayless stated, “He is a great passer of the basketball; I will give you that, but you’ve got the best passer in Lebron James right now. I don’t know how this is a great fit. It’s not like he’s a 3-point sniper who shoots 40 percent like Austin Reaves last year, especially through the playoffs. So what’s the value except star power?”

Young has been the superstar for the Hawks, taking them to the eastern conference finals in the 2020–21 season, where Young went on a tear throughout the conference teams as an underdog, upsetting many fan bases and gaining the moniker of “Ice Trae” and becoming the “villain” of the league.

Trae Young was a player with immense potential going into the 2018 draft. He played college basketball for the Oklahoma Sooners. The Atlanta Hawks selected Luka Doncic with the third overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. After that, he was dealt to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Young’s draft rights and a protected 2019 first-round pick.

Going into this rookie season, Young averaged an impressive 19.1 points and 8.1 assists. His stats saw a massive jump in his second year of playing all 81 games, earning him his first All-Star selection. In the 2021 season, Young went on a postseason tear, taking his underdog team to the Eastern Conference Finals, averaging 28.8 points and 9.5 assists, along with 1.3 steals. In the following season, the Hawks suffered a first-round exit. In the 2023 season, Young tried his best to help his team overcome the eventual Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics. Pushing the series to Game 6, dropping 30 points in vain as they eventually lost.

Young is the undisputed cornerstone of his franchise, and although his numbers may have dipped a bit, he is still a very dependable superstar who has a bright future ahead of him, displaying his potential very well in the dream 2021 playoff run. He requires a few more key components around him, which he may very well attain if he is sent to the Lakers to play alongside James and Anthony Davis. What the future holds for his career is yet to be seen.
