NBA players face an enormous amount of stress every time they step on the court. The eyes of their fans, the media and their teammates are on them. Understandably, this creates a lot of pressure on the players. This pressure can sometimes manifest itself on-court in a variety of forms. Gabe Vincent, former point guard of the Miami Heat reveals one such incident where Udonis Haslem, his former teammate, threw a chair out of frustration.
During an interview, when asked about his favorite Heat culture moments, Vincent cited Haslem throwing a chair during a timeout as one of his most memorable. The incident took place during the 2020 bubble season. Vincent recalls how Haslem cussed the entire team out before proceeding to throw a chair in an effort to hype the team up. Vincent says it is one of his fondest memories because it showed him that the Heat members held each other accountable for their actions and it indicated that players could express how they feel without others taking it personally.
Vincent was quoted saying, “We’re able to have an outburst and know it’s not personal. We can take that and progress forward.”
Without a doubt, the Heat locker room culture was intense. One could often see coach Erik Spoelstra, Jimmy Butler and Udonis Haslem having on-court shouting matches with each other in the middle of games. It’s this culture that Vincent liked the best and will miss. Vincent was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers this off-season.
How Gabe Vincent’s time in the NBA has been going
Gabe Vincent is relatively new to the NBA. He has been part of the G-league team – the Stockton Kings – since 2018. Later, in 2020, he signed a two-way contract with the Heat. He finally signed a standard contract with the Heat in August 2021.
It was during the 2023 NBA playoffs that Vincent appeared to really blossom. Fantastic for the Heat during the Eastern Conference Finals, he averaged 17.7 PPG, 60.7 FG%, 55.6 3P%, and 100.0 FT%. He also scored a career-high 29 points in a game 3 Heat victory.
Though Vincent and the Heat appeared to share a strong bond, Vincent was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers this off-season. It will be exciting to see how Vincent works with the Lakers team. It also remains to be seen how much playing time Vincent will get, seeing that the Lakers already have a point guard. Lakers’ fans will hope that when he is on the floor Vincent is able to perform at his peak. Whether or not he does so will only be seen once the regular season starts.
