Former Golden State Warriors and LA Lakers star Nick Young had a successful career in the NBA. This is down to the fact that he became the NBA champion with the Warriors in 2018 and also played for multiple big teams, the Clippers and the 76ers included.

Regardless, back in 2018, Young was at the end of a night out when he was spotted by TMZ. This obviously led to an impromptu interview. Young was initially asked about Canada’s then-recent decision to legalize marijuana. However, he ended up hilariously steering the conversation to something else.

When Young advocated the use of cocaine, the NBA star was bound to hit the media spotlight:

I want people to pass cocaine. Everybody needs to do cocaine!

The player was immediately met with criticism considering he himself is a bit of a role model. Fans wanted the NBA to be involved and claimed that the comment might as well be related to something more serious, than a mere joke. However, Nick Young, in response to the backlash, eventually took to Instagram.

He explained that fans should have realized he was merely joking, considering his overall personality:

Chill. You know I was just joking. Clearly dnt take noting I said serious ... I was just being funny ... y'all know me.

Hence, Young’s unfiltered comments might have initially created a huge controversy. However, the then-Warriors star was merely kidding and did not actually advocate for drug use.

Nick Young had a successful NBA career

Young’s journey in the NBA began at the Washington Wizards. He was selected as the 16th overall pick of the 2007 NBA draft and spent the first few years of his career as a role player. After short stints at the Clippers and the Philadelphia 76ers, the player then showed up at the Los Angeles Lakers.

Young started just 11 games in his first 3 seasons before becoming a firm starter in the 2016-17 season. This season, he averaged 13.2 points and 2.3 rebounds before being traded to the Warriors, where Young won his first and only championship. Alongside the likes of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green, ‘Swaggy P’ had a successful final two years before calling it quits on a career spanning more than a decade.

Of course, while he was never the biggest star on his teams, Young finished with a championship ring, which in itself is an achievement most NBA players only dream of. Hence, despite the above-mentioned controversy, Young is bound to look back at his time in the NBA only with fondness.
