LaMelo Ball Injury: How severe is the Hornets guard’s ankle sprain?

Charlotte Hornets have had a miserable season thus far. They currently stand 14th in the Eastern Conference with a 12-34 record. After their latest game against the bottom-placed Houston Rockets, their miseries continued to pile up on them. After a teammate stepped on LaMelo Ball‘s left ankle during Wednesday night’s 122-117 victory over the Houston Rockets, Ball needed assistance getting off the field and into the locker room.

This is the third time this season that he has hurt his left ankle. Ball attempted to block a shot early in the third quarter on Wednesday at the Toyota Center as Rockets player Jabari Smith passed him. P.J. Washington of the Hornets, who had also attempted to block Smith’s shot, came down and awkwardly stepped on Ball’s ankle after Ball had come to his feet in the lane.

LaMelo Ball and Washington both fell to the court as a result of that. The latter popped back up, but before walking off to the bench, Melo stayed there for a brief period of time and appeared to be in discomfort.

Melo wasn’t allowed to put much weight on his ankle after that as he was carried to the locker room. His night was cut short when the Hornets declared him ineligible due to what they described as a left ankle strain. He finished with four assists and 13 points. Ball, who is in his third season with the team, was averaging a career-high 24 points, 8.4 assists, and 5.4 rebounds per game as of Wednesday night.

LaMelo Ball was questioned by the media about his opinions on re-injuring the same ankle after the game. He added that he won’t be taking an X-ray because he doesn’t think there is any cause for concern. The player doesn’t believe the injury is as bad as it was the previous several times based on how he felt after suffering it. He doesn’t have any doubts about it because he can still use it to get around.

Ball said, “I can walk and everything, So I’ll just take it day by day and see what it is. It doesn’t feel like them other ones so I think I’ll be straight.” The Charlotte Hornets were without LaMelo Ball during the start of the 2022–23 NBA season because of a sprained left ankle. He was forced to miss the first 13 games of the season due to the injury. On November 16, when the Hornets played the Indiana Pacers, the second injury occurred. Melo might be selected for his second All-Star game if he can stay healthy through the break.
