The San Antonio Spurs hit the jackpot on Tuesday night when they won the 2023 NBA draft lottery and secured the No. 1 overall pick. That means they will probably select Victor Wembanyama, a 7’3″ French sensation who is considered the best prospect since LeBron James.
Wembanyama has been drawing comparisons to Kevin Durant for his rare combination of size, skill, and versatility. He can do it all on the court: shoot from deep, dribble, pass, and defend multiple positions. He is also a fearsome shot-blocker who has an eight-foot wingspan and a 9’8″ standing reach.
Many experts and scouts believe that Wembanyama has the potential to be a generational talent and a franchise changer. He is exactly what the Spurs need to rebuild their team and restore their former glory.
The NBA draft lottery is supposed to give a chance to the teams that struggle the most during the season. It’s not a reward for tanking or a sure thing for anyone. And it’s definitely not a scheme by the league to favor certain teams.

Fans cry foul as Spurs win lottery and chance to draft Victor Wembanyama
But not everyone is celebrating the Spurs and their lucky break. Some people on Twitter are claiming that the NBA fixed the lottery to help Gregg Popovich, one of the best and most beloved coaches in the league, who has led the Spurs to five titles since 1999.
Some of the tweets that showed this sentiment are:
It’s normal for some fans to be upset and envious of the Spurs’ fortune, but there is no proof that the NBA did anything shady. The odds of each team getting the top pick are based on their record and are known by everyone. The Spurs had a 14% chance of winning the lottery.
The Spurs didn’t get the No. 1 pick because of Popovich or because of their legacy. They got it because they got lucky. And they have every right to be happy about it without being accused of cheating by salty fans on Twitter.
