A Reddit user brought to attention the wrong statistical data that the Memphis Grizzlies. According to the user, the scorekeeper has been putting the wrong numbers in the stat sheet for Jaren Jackson Jr. He pointed at the inconsistencies in the stat sheet and the game time performance of the player in question. He alluded to the fact that there is a sudden increase in the performance of Jackson Jr. when his performance is recorded in home games. Jackson Jr. has consistently absurd block totals at home while playing fewer minutes per game than most other players.

Replying to the allegation of deliberate data fudging, the league issued a statement. The league said that all the data are gathered during real-time NBA games. “In order to ensure the integrity of our game statistics, auditors, independent of the statisticians on-site, review all plays and stats decisions in real-time during NBA games. If changes are necessary, they are made at that time or following a postgame review,” the league said in the statement.

The league also added that all the data gathered and displayed on the stat sheet were consistent with the regulations of the league’s manual. “All of the plays questioned in the post on Memphis games were scored consistently within the rules set forth by the NBA statisticians manual,” the league added.

This corresponds to an unbelievable 5.5 blocks + steals at home in fewer minutes compared to a more acceptable and realistic, but still excellent, 2.81 steals + blocks per game on the road. In these two categories alone, this amounts to a 1.96-fold improvement in home stats. A performance boost of 96% at home is so extreme that it warrants investigation.
