In the recent face-off between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Toronto Raptors, a fiery duel between D’Angelo Russell and Dennis Schroder ensued. The game had its fair share of controversies. Leaked audio has revealed a fiery exchange of words, showcasing the intense rivalry between the two.
The face-off escalated when Russell drew a foul against Schroder. Russell’s “too-little” celebration mocked Schroder’s defense as the shot went in. Tensions soared as Russell missed a subsequent free throw amidst Schroder’s jibes.

On the very next play, Dennis Schroder drew a foul against Russell, who dismissed it as flopping:
That sh*t is weak! Stop doing that weak a** sh*t.
The two almost came to blows but were swiftly separated by alert referees. Their previous season as brief teammates seemed a distant memory in the heat of the moment. Russell and Schroder are no strangers to trash-talking. Schroder has often unsettled his opponent. On the other hand, Russell’s heated trash talk with Bruce Brown during the In-Season Tournament final had recently gone viral.
D’Angelo Russell and the Lakers beat the Toronto Raptors 132-131 in a poorly officiated match that saw the Lakers being awarded 23 free throws in just the fourth quarter. Russell had 11 points, one rebound, and five assists, while Schroder recorded 10 points, two rebounds, and six assists.
Fans react to the D’Angelo-Schroder rivalry
Russell’s season with the Los Angeles Lakers has been a mix of highs and lows, including losing his starter spot and swirling trade speculations. Despite a decent average of 14.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 6.1 assists, his place in the Lakers’ plans is still in the air.

Twitter was abuzz with reactions, ranging from amusement to sharp critiques of the players. Some fans even dismissed their rivalry as somewhat insignificant, dubbing it as a battle between “mids”.
The match was, however, overshadowed by its poor officiating, with the Raptors’ head coach Darko Rajakovic going off post-game. He defended his players and remarked that if the NBA wants the Lakers to win so badly, they should just inform them beforehand so they don’t bother showing up.
