The 2023 NBA Draft had its share of twists and turns, but none more shocking than what happened with Chris Livingston, a former Kentucky standout who was projected to be a second-round pick. Livingston, who is signed with Klutch Sports Group, the agency run by Rich Paul and famous for representing LeBron James, apparently had a draft promise from a team and canceled all his remaining workouts before the draft.
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Paul started calling teams in the second round and asked them not to draft his client. Charania reported that Livingston had a set spot in the second round where he wanted to go.
This unprecedented move by Paul left NBA fans baffled and outraged, as they wondered how he could do that and what his motive was. Some speculated that Paul was trying to get Livingston to a specific team or situation that suited him better, while others suggested that Paul was trying to save Livingston from falling too far in the draft and losing money.
NBA Twitter erupted with reactions to Paul’s stunt, with many calling it unethical and unfair to other players and teams. Here are some of the reactions from Twitter:
Milwaukee Bucks draft Chris Livingston as No. 58th pick

Livingston knows some people think he should have stayed at Kentucky for another year to hone his game. But Livingston trusted his own readiness to make the jump to the NBA, and the Milwaukee Bucks rewarded his confidence by picking the Akron native as the 58th pick.
Livingston bounced around different high schools in Akron, Hudson and Virginia before landing at Kentucky, where he started 26 games and put up 6.3 points and 4.2 rebounds per game as a freshman.
Livingston believes he chose wisely and said that he’s not letting the skeptics get to him. “I don’t really get motivated [by it]. It’s kind of indifferent. I haven’t really thought about that or anything,” said Livingston. “I just worry about getting better every day, following my journey and walking into the plan that I’ve got for my life.”
