The sports world is a highly competitive one. Not just the game itself, but even the workings in the background are competitive. One of the things that often goes unnoticed is the role of sports agents. These agents are the reason behind all the successful blockbuster trades and deals. They can very well be why a star is moved from one team to the other, affecting the NBA landscape.

The world of sports agents is also extremely competitive. Agents scramble to bag clients who they feel can help them earn big. One of today’s most successful sports agents, Rich Paul, spoke up on this issue. Paul, who is LeBron James‘ agent, spoke about how other agents would try to talk bad about him. They would go to the families of athletes and say that Paul was only there for James and he didn’t care about other athletes’ future.

He was quoted saying, “No Black agents came to me and said, ‘Rich, let me help you, let me show you, let me help you understand.’ What they did was they went into families and talked bad about me. … ‘He’s just LeBron’s friend. … When LeBron is done, he’s going to be done.'”

Paul is now the CEO and co-founder of the Klutch Sports Group. The group has a wide array of customers. They are agents to almost 200 players, including the likes of LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Draymond Green. It appears that, despite facing shortcomings, Paul was able to succeed in making his mark as a sports agent.

How did LeBron James and Rich Paul meet?

It appears that the meeting between James and Paul didn’t happen anywhere close to an NBA organization. Or even close to a basketball court. It happened at an airport in Akron, Ohio.

It appears that the two struck up a conversation on clothes and jerseys. The conversation led to James inviting Paul to his inner circle. They ended up becoming close friends soon. The friendship would soon turn into a deal. When James was drafted by the Cavaliers in 2003, he asked Paul to become his agent.

Little did the two know this decision would change the course of their careers. Paul’s decision to become James’ agent led to him becoming one of the premier sports agent in the league. Paul has been instrumental in James’ key signings throughout the career.
