The NBA offseason is always a time for rumors and speculation, especially when it involves some of the biggest stars in the league. One of the hottest topics this summer is the future of Draymond Green, who opted out of his $27.5 million player option with the Golden State Warriors for the 2023-24 season.
Green, a four-time NBA champion and a key part of the Warriors’ dynasty with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, is now an unrestricted free agent. He can choose to sign with any team he wants, and many fans and analysts believe that he may reunite with his friend and former rival LeBron James on the Los Angeles Lakers.
The rumors got even more buzz when Green and James were seen hanging out together in France on Sunday. The two stars have a lot in common: they are both represented by Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, they are both vocal leaders and activists, and they both have a hunger for more rings.
Green and James have had some epic battles on the court, most notably in the 2016 NBA Finals when Green’s suspension in Game 5 helped James lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a historic comeback from a 3-1 deficit. However, they also have mutual respect and admiration for each other, as well as a friendship that goes beyond basketball.
Draymond Green expected to stay with Warriors despite tension
Despite some tension between Draymond Green and the Warriors, the four-time champion is expected to stay with the franchise that drafted him in 2012, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
“Opting out was just for procedure,” Woj said. “It made sense to do that financially and now go back and negotiate a new deal with the Warriors. These are two sides that very much want to get a deal done. Draymond and Rich Paul are not posturing and threatening to go elsewhere, even though there are great options out there for them…”
Green had a solid season for the Warriors, averaging 8.5 points, 7.2 rebounds and 6.8 assists per game. He also earned a spot on the NBA All-Defensive second team and finished fourth in the voting for Defensive Player of the Year. But he didn’t have his best year by his own standards, as he dealt with some injuries and conflicts with the team.
Now, Green faces a big decision about his future in the NBA. Will he stay loyal to the franchise that drafted him in 2012, or will he follow his friend LeBron James to another team?
