“It’s not in my DNA anymore,” LeBron James fires shots at the depleted Lakers as suffering continues

“It’s not in my DNA anymore,” LeBron James fires shots at the depleted Lakers as suffering continues

Given the Lakers’ record and position in the Western Conference, Wednesday’s post-game news conference should have contained few shocks if anything at all. LeBron James spoke out after the Lakers’ fifth defeat in six games, which dropped them seven games below .500. It came across a string of questions that seemed to be directed deliberately at the front office.

Here, reading between the lines or sub-tweeting is not necessary. To the front office, LeBron is firing a pretty direct strike with this. LeBron has largely stood back and watched the Lakers’ fortunes this season, with a few notable exceptions. The Lakers, meanwhile, have made some very substantial strides backwards as a result of Anthony Davis’ injury. The Lakers lost their next four games after winning the game in which he was injured and the one after that to get to three games under .500. The purple and gold also lost in Miami despite LeBron’s impressive effort.

The Lakers’ terribly broken roster has plagued them for at least 35 games this season, and they have done nothing to fix it, which is probably the root of the dissatisfaction. The early 20-game cutoff date passed. The deadline for trading the majority of the league on December 15 also came and went. The Lakers have chosen to stand put instead, fielding a team with a roster that scarcely resembles a contemporary one due to the utter absence of wings and shooters. Everyone has seen the problems, and it is obvious that this squad cannot consistently compete.

James was challenged to look ahead rather than the past when asked how much longer he intends to play in the NBA. This was back at the venue where he may have played some of the finest basketball of his career. When asked how many more seasons he has left, James responded, “I don’t have a number,” following the Los Angeles Lakers’ 112-98 loss against his former team, the Miami Heat, on Wednesday. “I know as long as my mind stays in it, I can play at this level for a minute.”

LeBron James further added: “I’m a winner and I want to win. And I want to win and give myself a chance to win and still compete for championships. That has always been my passion… Playing basketball at this level just to be playing basketball is not in my DNA. It’s not in my DNA anymore.”

The 20-year veteran had another outstanding night on his own, leading the Lakers in points (27), rebounds (9), and assists (6). However, Los Angeles dropped to 14-21 on the year. The Lakers after the loss were ranked 13th out of 15 teams in the Western Conference after losing for the ninth time in its previous 13 match-ups.
