In a recent media interaction, Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James made it abundantly clear that he is not one to back down. With the new NBA season on the horizon, LeBron subtly conveyed a direct message to his competitors, including Kevin Durant, Dillon Brooks, and Denver Nuggets head coach Mike Malone, all of whom had been involved in trash talk with the superstar.
James, widely recognized as one of the best in the league, is also known for his ability to block out the noise and trash talk that occurs on the court, allowing him to maintain his focus on the game.
But in a recent interview, LeBron was asked about when he feels right to draw a line to all the talk and verbal sparring. Responding to the question, he said:
There will be a time when everybody will get it.
In today’s NBA, trash-talking or engaging in verbal sparring is often used as a means to assert dominance and gain a mental edge over opponents. One player who is renowned for this is Kevin Durant.
The history of trash talk between Durant and LeBron dates back to the 2017 NBA Finals when the two superstars engaged in a heated exchange.
Dillon Brooks, who was a part of the Memphis Grizzlies at that time, took a shot at James during last season’s first-round playoffs series when the Grizzlies faced the Lakers. After the Grizzlies secured a victory in Game 2, Brooks referred to the basketball legend as “old.” Brooks further added:
I poke bears. I don't respect anyone until they come and give me 40
While James was unable to score 40 against Memphis, they were successful in defeating the Grizzlies in six straight games.
Mike Malone, the head coach of the Denver Nuggets, didn’t shy away from sharing his thoughts during the time when the Lakers faced the Nuggets in the Western Conference finals. He downplayed the Lakers’ loss and ended up winning the championship with the Nuggets.
He said:
That's not a rivalry. I mean, you can't play a team in the Western Conference finals twice in the last couple of years and think it's a rivalry.
James has built his career on silencing his competitors and critics throughout the league. The superstar remains committed to continuing this trend and giving his best in the upcoming season.
LeBron James intends to win another NBA championship with the Lakers
LeBron James has expressed a strong desire to secure another championship with the Los Angeles Lakers. Despite winning the NBA championship in 2020, he doesn’t appear satisfied with just one title. LeBron has made it clear that he’s not in it for a short stint and has serious goals he aims to accomplish as the new NBA season unfolds.
In a media interaction leading up to the start of the regular season on October 24th, LeBron James emphasized that his primary intention in joining the Lakers was to drape the franchise in gold.
He said:
When I came here, I felt like I didn’t just want to be here for a short stint. I came in with the notion that I wanted to help this franchise get back to the postseason…and be able to put another one of those Larry O'Brien trophies back in Jeanie Buss’ office. And I was able to do that. I want to move one of those Larry O’Brien trophies to the side and put another one up.
The Lakers, featuring LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and other standout players like Austin Reaves, are indeed considered one of the formidable contenders for the NBA championship.
