Delonte West and LeBron James
Following a BIG3 roster snub, former NBA player Delonte West, who played with LeBron James on the Cleveland Cavaliers, was once again sighted begging for money on a Virginia highway. West, 38, was eligible to be drafted into Ice Cube’s BIG3 league, but he was passed over. West appears to be back on the streets begging for money a few weeks after the snub.

West was filmed carrying a small cardboard sign on a Virginia highway by a fan, and the video has now gone viral. West had been seen doing the same thing before Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban picked him up from a gas station and provided him with some much-needed assistance since West has been arrested for pounding on the Boynton Beach Police Department’s lobby doors while intoxicated. Following many stints at rehabilitation facilities, he began making a push to play in the BIG3 league.

Delonte West was a sophomore at Greenbelt’s Eleanor Roosevelt High School when he was named the Washington Post’s All-Met Player of the Year. West attended Saint Joseph’s University, where he averaged 18.9 points and 4.7 assists as a junior, leading the Hawks to a 30-2 record and an NCAA tournament participation in the Elite Eight. He dropped out of school early and was drafted in the first round of the 2004 Draft by the Boston Celtics. By 2008-09, he was a member of a Cleveland Cavaliers team that finished the regular season with the best record in the NBA before falling in the Eastern Conference finals and he was confident that he had a bright future ahead of him.
According to Forbes, Delonte West made around $16 million throughout his 8-year NBA career and he was said to have only $100,000 of the $16 million wealth he had earned as a pro in 2016 whereas his current net worth is $1,000. During his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2008, the former first-round draft pick was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. And while he was still involved with the sport, he had a string of unusual on- and off-court behavioral outbursts and interactions with police authorities, including a 10-game suspension in 2010.There have also been many cases of unexcused absences post which the NBA was finally done with West in 2012.

West has been contacted by a number of NBA players and owners who have offered to assist him with resources. Delonte West’s former college teammate Jameer Nelson, Boston Celtics GM Danny Ainge, and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban have all contacted West in recent years accordingly.
Following the incident of January 2020 in which Delonte West was spotted being beaten up on the streets of Washington DC, LeBron James was also said to be assisting West. James was willing to “break the bank” to assist West in getting back on his feet and into a rehab facility in Los Angeles. The report drew varied reactions, particularly because James and West had a volatile relationship. Multiple rumors surfaced in 2010 that West was having an affair with James’ mother Gloria. Though West denied the rumors, he was traded to the Boston Celtics in 2011.
