LeBron James was one of the most anticipated prospects in the history of the league. He was selected No.1 overall by his hometown team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, in the 2003 draft. The draft class was one of the most loaded draft classes in the league’s history. He made his career debut against the Sacramento Kings on October 29, 2003 and shined in his debut. It was his 20th anniversary since his debut when he played against the Kings on October 29, 2023.
The Kings recognized the greatness of LeBron James prior to the game between the two teams. They gifted him an expensive bottle of wine, a pair of Nikes, and a framed photo of him making the first dunk of his career against them. While the Lakers didn’t secure the win in his 20th-anniversary game, LeBron scored 27 points and 15 rebounds.
LeBron played 39 minutes in the game, playing well over his 28-30-minute time limit in the overtime game between the Lakers and Kings. The Kings secured the win 132-127, with De’Aaron Fox leading the team with 37 points in just 34 minutes. LeBron did not seem to lose a step in his game and continues to dominate.
LeBron’s impressive rookie year
LeBron debuted in the NBA exactly 20 years ago on October 29, 2003. He was among the new wave of stars transitioning from high school to the NBA rather than taking the conventional college route to the league. Many people doubted James because he wasn’t a proven talent in the college basketball setting.
When he entered the league, the expectations from him were sky high given the hype he had entering into the league. He certainly didn’t disappoint and dropped an impressive 25 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and four steals. James also kept his performance consistent, becoming only the third player after Oscar Robertson and Michael Jordan to average 20/5/5 in his rookie season and won the Rookie of the Year title over the likes of Carmelo Anthony and future teammate Dwyane Wade.
