The biggest surprise of the FIBA World Cup was the emergence of Dennis Schroder who led Germany to win the World Cup after overcoming tough opponents. They defeated the likes of Team USA and Serbia on their way to capturing the title. Schroder was awarded the honor of the tournament MVP which has been won by players such as Kevin Durant and fellow German icon Dirk Nowitzki.
Schroder, who saw his performance rise last season with the Los Angeles Lakers, had previously rejected an $81 million contract offer from them in 2021. He signed with the Toronto Raptors this off-season to replace their veteran guard, Fred VanVleet. Previously he wasn’t expected to lead the team as well as VanVleet but this performance has ignited hopes in Raptors fans that they might have found a hidden gem.
Schroder’s performance hasn’t gone unnoticed by his former teammates, many of them including LeBron James. LeBron congratulated his former teammate for winning the MVP of the tournament on his Instagram story. The 29-year-old guard averaged a phenomenal 19.1 points, 6.1 assists, and 1.4 steals per game to help his team achieve the goal that most never expected them to achieve.
LeBron James reacts to heartfelt moment between Dennis Schroder and Austin Reaves
Germany defeated Team USA in the semi-finals of the FIBA World Cup, which eliminated the USA from title contention. After the game, former teammates Austin Reaves and Dennis Schroder were seen sharing a heartfelt moment. Dennis gave his jersey to his former teammate, Reaves, and they shared a moment together, which Dennis shared on his Instagram with earnest affection toward his former teammate.
Dennis wrote about how Reaves was still there to congratulate him on his victory while still bearing the pain of the loss. He said that while Reaves is a menace on the court, he is one of the most genuine people off the court. Lakers star LeBron James shared the video on his Instagram, writing, ‘My dawgs! Love you boys!!!!,’ showing his admiration for the maturity shown by the young players.
While the Raptors may not have a conversation about being contenders next year, the Lakers are definitely fighting for title contention. It will be up to Reaves, LeBron, and Anthony Davis to lead their team to the championship after coming close last season. After facing disappointment in the World Cup, Reaves would be motivated to show that he is a championship-level player.
