LeBron James, the Los Angeles Lakers superstar is a billionaire. Earning almost $47.6 million dollars this season, the $500,000 cash incentive for winning the In-Season Tournament was not the motivation for James.

But for the younger players in the Lakers lineup $500,000 is a lot of money. James did not grow up with a lot of money in the family. He knew the importance of that amount to the younger players who earn a fraction of what James earns. The 2-way contract players currently on the roster for the Lakers will get $250,000 as is the mandate of the NBA. James said this to the young players before starting the final game;

I got y’all. Don’t even worry about it.

LeBron basically promised the young players that his motivation was to win them the prize money. He knew it would be a big help in their young careers.

LeBron James and Anthony Davis combined to help the Los Angeles Lakers win the In-Season Tournament against the Indiana Pacers. Being the first-ever In-Season Tournament was motivation for James. But helping out his younger teammates was, as is now evident, at the back of his mind. James has always been supportive of younger players throughout his career.

For 2-way contract players, Alex Fudge, D’Moi Hodge and Colin Castleton the $250,000 win is a massive amount, considering their $559,782 salary. Joining them in gratitude was Maxwell Lewis who has the lowest full-time Lakers contract at $1.1 million. Each of them was grateful to the all-time leading scorer in league history for the win.

How will the young players treat the winning money?

Alex Fudge, D’Moi Hodge, Colin Castleton and Maxwell Lewis said while speaking with Andscape they had never seen this amount of money before. Hence they will save some, send some to their families, spend some on themselves etc. They talked about the education in money the veterans on the team constantly instil in them.

Teams playing in the tournament spoke about the cash prize as a motivation for them to compete. Many were looking forward to spending the winnings on lavish choices. But for these young Lakers players helping their families and saving up for the future seems to be the choice they have made.

Having the only currently playing billionaire athlete in basketball as their leader will instill some confidence in making the right choices with the money they have won. But more important is their gratitude towards one of the greatest players of all time for looking out for them.
