“LeBron James is still playing” Giannis Antetokounmpo gets honest on being deemed as the ‘face’ of the league

LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo

Despite being regarded as the current ‘best’ player in the league Giannis Antetokounmpo has consistently denied all those. With LeBron James in the 20th season of his career, the 37-year-old is still playing at a high level, which is very rare in a league dominated by fast moving players filled with dynamic moves and athleticism.

Despite the decline in his mobility, LeBron has not only changed his approach towards the game but also kept his body in shape to compete in the NBA that has an overwhelming amount of young players.

Giannis Antetokounmpo sat with his Milwaukee Bucks teammate Serge Ibaka in a candid conversation. When asked by Ibaka on his YouTube channel whether Giannis was the face of the NBA, the Greek Freak avoided the question and said, “I want to be like Tim Duncan I want to disappear. You put me in the face of the league I am trying to disappear from it.

When Ibaka revisited the question to force an answer, Giannis replied, “definitely I am one of the faces of the league” and Ibaka was definitely not satisfied with the answer. But Giannis reminded Ibaka that the greats are still hooping in the NBA. Giannis said, “LeBron is still playing Steph has won a championship KD is still hoping Embiid is killing Jokic back to back MVP, Luka magic.” He added, “there are lot of players out there.

Despite the fact that Giannis has accomplished almost all big feats in his career, he has refused to call himself either the face of the league or the best player in the world.

37-year-old LeBron James is playing at a high level in his year 20th NBA season

LeBron has been in limelight since high school and even after 20 years in the league, he remains the center of attention. Despite being under pressure since day one in the NBA James has successfully treaded through his career masterfully. He is considered by many as the top two players in the league in the history of basketball. He has not only lived up to the hype but also exceeded expectations.

Even if you have been following the league for the past decade you already know questioning the greatness and efficiency of LeBron James has always been and will always be a big mistake. Before James won his 4th NBA title in 2020 many NBA pundits had claimed that LeBron’s 2016 championship was his last. LeBron started his “revenge season” and ended with the title and the finals MVP award. He ended the run with his iconic line, “and I want my damn respect too.

This season LeBron James might surpass Kareem Abdul Jabbar as the highest scorer in NBA history. LeBron James would be the youngest player to reach the mark of 38,000 points. Last season LeBron averaged 30.3 points per game which is the highest by a 37-year-old player in NBA history followed by Karl Malone who averaged 23.2 points per game at the same age. There is no question LeBron has surpassed the level of relevance at this age.

Although Los Angeles Lakers are among the bottom teams in the league, LeBron has maintained his leadership role in the team. Given the history of the league LeBron at 37 is definitely toying with the concept of age that the league has ever seen.

If historically analyzed most players retire at the age of 37 but LeBron over the years has reinvented himself to be fitter and compete against the younger stars.
