“It was an anti-racism song,” LeBron James’ podcast partner JJ Redick hilariously reveals rapping in college

JJ Redick

JJ Redick was a guest on Andrew Schulz’s show “Flagrant,” where he talked about his new podcast with LeBron James. Their podcast will center around current players, NBA analysis, and the game itself. It was born out of frustration with the constant GOAT debate. Interestingly, he also talked about how he recorded rap in college.

JJ Redick has been on fire since he started the “Mind the Game” podcast with LeBron James. In addition to being one of the leading broadcasters on ESPN, he has seen his stock rise, where he now has the power to use his voice for positive change, as he tried when invited to the “Flagrant” show.

The conversation moved toward the need to stop racism and sexism after comedian Schulz asserted he could beat any female basketball player, including NCAA scoring record breaker Caitlin Clark, one-on-one. Redick, in response, told the other members of the pod present that he wrote rap songs while he was in college. He recorded a particular track about anti-racism with a friend at Duke University.

It wasn't good stuff...So a couple of years ago, he's like, 'dude, I found the songs,' and I'm like, send them to me, so he sends them to me, and this was 2003. And me and him did a song. It was an anti-racism song.

He further talked about how he’s been ‘woke’ since his college days at Duke. He played college basketball for the Duke Blue Devils before being drafted 11th by the Orlando Magic. Not many know that Redick is one of the pioneers of podcasts in the NBA industry that has seen several other active and ex-basketball players take to the trend.

JJ Redick talks about a heckling episode while at Duke

While still on Andrew Schulz’s show, JJ Redick shared an incident from his college days involving the heckling he had to endure from the fans in the arena. This incident took place when his team was playing away against the North Carolina State.

There was this guy at NC State who, publicly, in an article said, ‘He holds his follow through like he’s gay or something.’ And like nothing happened, nothing happened. There was no like, ‘We need to cancel this guy’…It was just a different time, a different time.

He also shared how he once confronted a fan from the opposing team who mocked him and his brother. It reached a breaking point where he had to address the issue by writing an article to fans on the sorrows of heckling.

Redick realized how difficult it would be to play in an opponent’s backyard, but sometimes fans must realize that all athletes are humans. And hopefully, the authorities do something to arrest the situation before it truly escalates.
