With the backing of NBA star LeBron James, the Boston Celtics fan base is once again experiencing criticism. On the most recent edition of “The Shop,” when asked which city he actually hates playing in the most, LeBron immediately mentioned Boston, and he was unreserved in his criticism of the locals. Additionally to owning a share in the Boston Red Sox and Liverpool FC he is a billionaire and currently plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. The five-time NBA champion gave a timely response with a comment that is certain to spark a lot of debate, especially among Celtics supporters.
James said that Boston Celtics supporters are “racist as f—-” when speaking with the actor Daniel Kaluuya, the football player Marcus Rashford, the artist Rashid Johnson, Paul Rivera, and Maverick Carter. The nasty atmosphere that the Celtics’ supporters are known for fostering affected this year’s NBA Finals as well. Over the years, Boston has been accused of being racist on several occasions. Coming from LeBron, it is even more obvious why many athletes loathe Boston’s supporters.
Lebron James and his history with Boston.
LeBron James became a unique phenomenon during his first season in Cleveland. His four years in South Beach filled the gap on his résumé the size of a championship. His return to the Cavaliers demonstrated his complete command of the game and cemented his place among the NBA’s all-time greats. LeBron has took part in various games in the heat of the postseason in Boston. The early years of LeBron were a rather dry spell in Boston’s history. In their matchups with the Cavaliers, LeBron and Paul Pierce, two of the best small forwards in the league, competed for little more than personal bragging rights.
Boston focused most of their efforts on the lottery while Lebron James led his Cavaliers to the 2007 NBA Finals. Boston and Cleveland met up swiftly in the 2008 Eastern Conference Semifinals, with the Celtics winning one of the most dramatic Game 7s in NBA history. LeBron’s story against Orlando in 2009 and the rematch with the Celtics in 2010 continued it. James understood that he needed help from teammates to defeat the Big Three of Boston since he couldn’t defeat them on his own.
He chose to join Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh on the Miami Heat in free agency that summer because it was the only place that could provide everything. They defeated the Celtics in 2011 and 2012, making it to the finals where they defeated OKC in 2012, giving Lebron James his first championship. LeBron would wait until the 2015 playoffs to meet the Celtics from 2015-18 in which Lebron emerged victorious throughout the 4 year span.
LeBron explained that he chose the Celtics supporters to hate the most and when asked why, he said: “Boston because they racist as f**ck that’s why, they will say anything. I’ve been dealing with this my whole life, I don’t mind it. Like if I hear someone close by I check him real quick then move onto the game. They gonna say whatever the f**k they wanna say, I even got a beer thrown on me once leaving the game.” Although it’s not surprising that an NBA player would find Boston to be particularly unpleasant, it’s unusual to see someone who owns a stake with the Boston Red Sox going after the city’s fan base.
Throughout his career, LeBron James dominated the entire Eastern Conference. He has consistently shown in the playoffs that he is very good against the Boston Celtics. The fact that Boston fans despise him so much is not surprising, because LeBron has always enjoyed the fire. He loves to reject those who have consistently reflected negatively on him over the years because it makes him better. LeBron will undoubtedly receive a hostile welcome when he plays at the TD Garden next, but he won’t be bothered in the slightest so actually, it’s nothing new.
