LeBron James, Tony Brown
Tony Brown, a longtime NBA official, passed away on Thursday at the age of 55 from pancreatic cancer. LeBron James of the Lakers posted a heartfelt message on Twitter along with some few brief recollections of his interactions with him over Brown’s 20-year stint in the league.
The NBA underwent a sorrowful day when one of its veteran referees, Tony Brown, passed away. At the age of 55, the seasoned official was battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer and was among the best NBA officials the league has ever seen. After a courageous fight, Brown’s illness claimed his life even though his condition had improved enough for him to resume working at the NBA replay centre last season. Florida-born referee Brown had worked 1,110 regular-season matchups and 35 postseason matches over 20 seasons.
LeBron James joined the NBA community in grief by posting his happiest moments and memories of the referee on Twitter. He stated in his tweet saying: “R.I.P. Tony man!! Great ref but greater dude! Loved when I ran on the court for warmups and he would be on the game that night! Your smile & laugh will be missed tremendously here in our sport!” Brown actually officiated during the 2020 NBA Finals, which James’ Lakers won 4-2 over the Heat.

James, who is also a philanthropist, established the “I Promise School” in Akron, Ohio, in collaboration with Akron Public Schools and the LeBron James Family Foundation in an effort to close the achievement gap in education there. The initiative provides resources and support for kids who would not be on course to finish high school.
James stated in 2015 that students from Kent State University who passed certain academic requirements would receive free tuition there when the University of Akron joined the scheme. According to a recent poll, Lebron, who has a $1 billion lifetime contract with Nike, is the second-richest athlete in the world behind only his idol Michael Jordan.
