LeBron James has had an illustrious career made out of poster dunks, buzzer beaters and pretty applaud-worthy attacking prowess, and now he is returning to the Drew League to showcase his skills and flex his plays. The Los Angeles Lakers star-studded team not making into the playoffs was and has been one of the biggest talking points in and around the world of NBA.

With One of the All-Time Greats, Lebron James himself, and two future Hall of Famers in Anthony Davis and freshly traded, Russell Westbrook, the Lakers looked scary on paper, not so much on court. The legendary Laker is now putting up a show with his good friend, DeMar DeRozan in the Drew League prior to the start of the league season.

Lebron has had a stressful season with people questioning him over and over again, as the Lakers underperformed drastically. They started the season poorly and didn’t seem to take games seriously until after the All-Star break. There seemed to be a lack of urgency among the players in general, with all the injuries, they never developed any rhythm.

Hence, blowing off some steam in the Drew League is not a bad idea, as the 38 year old looks to have a much better season than last year. With multiple speculations around his time at the Lakers, We’ve got to wait a few months to know whether the 4x Champ stays and gets another attempt for the Lakers’ 18th title or he gets traded. The Lakers have a proud winning history, but that desire to always be in contention may have just backfired after the 2021-22 season that saw them miss the playoffs.

The Drew League is a renowned pro-am basketball league. People jam-pack high school basketball gyms to see a diverse array of skilled players compete. Hence, to call it the giant mecca of summer basketball would likely be fair. It was established in Los Angeles in 1973 and since then, countless NBA luminaries have embraced the action-packed league. Players like Kevin Durant, Paul Pierce, Trevor Ariza, Chris Paul, John Wall, and a boatload of others have all hit the Drew League courts. Even the late great Kobe Bryant took part in 2011. He dropped 45 and sank a game-winning dagger over James Harden, sending fans into a frenzy.

However, Lebron has just sent shockwaves across the NBA after announcing his return to the Drew League for the first time since 2011, yesterday. Given how electric the crowd was during the last appearance LBJ made in the Drew League, it was again a sight to behold as the 37-year-old entered the court 11-years later. Not only that, DeMar DeRozan had also confirmed that he would play in the Drew League tomorrow. Before their highly-anticipated team-up, reports circulated that both may participate, but DeRozan semi-officially broke the news on Twitter. He tweeted out a somewhat cryptic message announcing that he would be teaming up with James in the Drew League.

LeBron led his team to victory behind a 42-point, 16-rebound performance. James looked like he was in mid-season form already, and incidentally, he also brought his classic negotiation tactic with the referees too, to the glorified exhibition game. LeBron teamed up with Chicago Bulls star DeMar DeRozan in this one, who himself delivered an eye-popping display as well. The five-time All-Star finished with 30 points and 14 rebounds, which also prompted a special message from James-

While videos of his workouts have been going viral, perhaps putting in some game time will be essential for LBJ to stay sharp ahead of a crucial season. The two stars earned the win, but it was a close game. The final score was 104-102, and the opposing team had a chance to win it in the final seconds but ended up missing what would have been the game-winning shot. James and DeRozan drew the eyes of the NBA, too, as a ton of NBA stars showed up to watch them play.

The Lakers had a drastically poor record of 33-49 , as they move on from this nightmarish season, they will have to make plenty of moves to get back on track. As LeBron gets ready for the upcoming season, the team will have to give him more reinforcements to bring back the legacy of the Lakers. Moreover, he has to solve the disparities between him and the management to ensure a smooth season where he can focus on the court more, rather than off it. For now, enjoy him dropping 40 bombs in the drew league.
