August 24th is known to be celebrated as Mamba Day by basketball fans around the world in memory of the late, great Kobe Bryant. This is because of the jersey numbers he wore during his incredible 20-year-long career: No. 8 and No. 24. It’s also a day after Kobe’s birthday. Though Mamba may not be with us anymore, the impact he left is still felt. He inspired a generation of players who share their most memorable Kobe memories whenever they get the chance.

On Mamba Day, many players and coaches come together to celebrate the legend. Steve Kerr, the Warriors Head Coach who experienced the greatest feat in basketball history as his team won 73 games in 2016, the same day Kobe scored 60 points in his final game, remembered Mamba on his birthday. Despite being thousands of miles away from the US, Kerr expressed that everyone still thinks about Kobe and what he meant to the league, fans, and players. Kerr said, “We all think about Kobe to this day and everything he meant to the league and to all of us.”

Not only Kerr, but LeBron James also remembered Mamba on his birthday by posting a picture of a young LeBron meeting the Black Mamba. Despite their memorable battles on the court, their relationship off the court was brotherly. They were both inspired by Kobe’s work ethic and always aspired to be better than the Mamba.

Vanessa Bryant commemorated the memory of herself and her husband, Kobe Bryant, in a recent Instagram post she made on what would have been Kobe’s 45th birthday. She shared photos of the couple together, accompanied by a caption: “Happy birthday, baby. I love you always & forever. ❤️ #82378.”

Kobe and Vanessa were married for over twenty years and had four daughters together. Unfortunately, their time together was cut short after Kobe and their second eldest daughter, Gianna, passed away in a helicopter crash back in 2020.

Vanessa has been making efforts to keep Mamba’s legacy alive. Recently, she collaborated with Nike, the brand whose shoes Kobe wore and endorsed for the majority of his career, to create a new line of Kobe 8 shoes. A new edition of these shoes will be launched every year on his birthday. This initiative is a touching way to pay tribute to Kobe’s influence on the game of basketball and his lasting impact.
