In February, the Los Angeles Lakers made a major change to their lineup by trading Russell Westbrook for D’Angelo Russell, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Malik Beasley. Unfortunately, the Los Angeles Lakers experienced a setback when LeBron James sustained an injury to his right foot tendon while playing against the Dallas Mavericks later that month.

Despite James’ absence, the Lakers managed to maintain a record of 8-5. James returned on March 26, and the team has since won three consecutive games. The month-long break allowed James to rest and recover, and there may be a potential benefit: Richard Jefferson, a former teammate of James and current ESPN analyst, has observed that James appears to have lost 10-12 pounds since his injury.

“Well one of the things I’ve noticed is that he looks like he lost about 10, 12 pounds from the time that he got hurt to now,” Jefferson said. “It looks like he’s trying to take weight off of that foot, make him a little bit lighter, make him a little bit quicker.”

Jefferson suggested that James may have done this to reduce the burden on his foot, allowing him to move more quickly and lowering the risk of further injury.

LeBron James’ role in the Lakers’ success cannot be understated, particularly as the team approaches their remaining fixtures against the Utah Jazz, LA Clippers, and Phoenix Suns. While the game against Utah may be the least challenging of the three, with the Lakers having lost both previous matchups against them this season, they cannot afford to underestimate their opponents.

It is possible that James will rest during the Utah game to avoid burnout and prepare for the Clippers and Suns matchups, where he will be needed most. Anthony Davis will need to take charge in James’ absence, continuing his current form and leading the charge for the Lakers.

Ultimately, the Lakers’ success in the remaining games will depend on their ability to work together as a team, with or without James on the court. The Lakers have shown that they can succeed even in James’ absence, and with James’ return to form and Davis’ leadership, they could emerge as a serious contender in the Western Conference.
