The Denver Nuggets pulled off a stunning sweep of the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night, ending their season and advancing to the Western Conference finals. After the game, LeBron James shocked everyone by hinting at possibly retiring from basketball. He said he was “very frustrated and angry” and had “a lot to think about” regarding his future.

James’ comments raised a lot of questions about his plans and motivations. The four-time NBA MVP, who will turn 39 in December, is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time and is still playing at an elite level. James has two more years left on his contract with the Lakers. However, according to his former teammate and current ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins, the Lakers star’s statement was not a genuine expression of his retirement plans but a message to his current teammates and the franchise’s front office.

Perkins, who played with James on the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2014 to 2015, said on ESPN’s First Take that James was “talking to Anthony Davis” and “delivered a message to Rob Pelinka, Jeanie Buss, and the front office”.

That message was straight delivered to Rob Pelinka, Jeanie Buss, and the front office… and he was talking to Anthony Davis. … When are you going to stop being so damn lazy in the offseason?” said Perkins.

Perkins accused Davis of being “so damn lazy in the offseason” and not taking care of his body. Davis missed 36 games this season due to various injuries and was not able to play at his usual level in the playoffs. He averaged 22..6 points and 14.1 rebounds per game in the postseason this year.

Perkins also criticized Pelinka, the Lakers general manager, and Buss, the team owner, for not providing James with enough support on the roster. He said the Lakers made some “bad moves” in the offseason and did not address their needs for shooting, defense, and depth.

Perkins suggested that James was sending a signal to the Lakers’ brass to make some changes this summer and improve the team around him. He said James still has a lot of motivation to play and win more titles, especially after losing in such a disappointing fashion.

James has not confirmed or denied his retirement plans since his post-game comments. He may take some time off to rest and reflect on his future. However, based on Perkins’ analysis, it seems unlikely that James will walk away from the game anytime soon. He still has a lot of reasons to keep playing and chasing greatness.
