Almost 20 years ago, a kid from St Vincent St Mary High School in Akron, Ohio, was dubbed to take over the Kingdom of Basketball. And today, that kid stands tall as LeBron James– the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. Things have come full circle after 20 years as French basketball prodigy Victor Wembanyama is bound to take the basketball world by storm. He is projected to be the 2023 NBA Draft’s first pick by almost every GM.
He easily draws the attention of any scout, being 7 feet 4 inches tall with an 8 foot wingspan. But It’s his ability to move like a guard that sets him apart from the rest. On Tuesday, Sports Illustrated walked everyone through the 19-year-old’s game and future plans.
Interstingly, the daily cover also included LeBron James’ thoughts on the potential first pick. “We are labelling like this unicorn thing—everybody’s been a unicorn over the last few years, But he’s more like an alien—no one has seen anyone as tall as he is but as fluid and as graceful as he is on the floor,” said James.
Wembanyama is a member of the Metropolitans 92 of the LNB Pro A, France’s top-tier men’s professional basketball league. The young gun has placed his side Metropolitans 92 in contention for the title, averaging 22.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game.

Wembanyama does not like to be called a Unicorn
Victor Wembanyama responded to LeBron James’ comments about him, and fair to say, he was thrilled. The 19-year-old said, “First of all, I’m really glad he said that because I didn’t like to be called a unicorn, I like it because it’s just something not from this world. I like being called an alien, yeah. It’s really what I’m working to be—something unique and original.”
Wembanyama drew attention from the US media during two exhibition games in October 2022 against the NBA G League Ignite. Scoot Henderson, the potential second-round pick in 2023, also competed in the games in Las Vegas. Wembanyama posted monster stat lines in both games, scoring 37 points and five blocks in the first game and 36 points and 11 rebounds in the second. Because of his aforementioned performances, the NBA agreed to broadcast Metropolitans 92 regular season games on its website.
An anonymous NBA executive stated before the start of the 2022 season that teams would be willing to tank their season to acquire Wembanyama. He is undoubtedly one of the most hyped prospects in recent years. And the 7’3 Center’s skill set is just getting better. It will be fascinating to see how he responds to the huge pressure surrounding him and emerges triumphant.
