“I know only God can judge you” Lil Wayne extends supporting hand towards Brittney Griner

Lil Wayne, Brittney Griner

WNBA player Brittney Griner has gained the backing of other athletes and Lil Wayne recently, who want to see her sent back to the United States after her incarceration in Russia in February 2022. After first hesitating, Russia has suddenly spoken up and is ready to take action. Early reports indicated that Russia was willing to exchange Viktor Bout, a notorious international arms dealer, for Griner and another American. However, the Russian Foreign Ministry criticized the US on Thursday for continuing to describe to the WNBA star as being “wrongfully imprisoned” by Moscow authorities, asserting that this disrespects Russian law.

Many individuals, including famous ones, thought the sentence was excessively severe. And many people were indignant at the 9-year sentence. Numerous NBA and WNBA players, as well as celebrities, rappers, artists, and others, have endorsed Griner. In a recent album, rapper Lil Wayne has now shown his support for her. DJ Khaled has released his new album, “God Did.”  Superstars Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, JAY-Z, John Legend, and Fridayy? appeared on the album. Lil Wayne took advantage of the occasion to embrace the Phoenix Mercury star in his lyrics.

Brittney Griner and her tough situation in Russia

Since being selected by the Phoenix Mercury in the first round of the 2013 WNBA draft out of Baylor University, Brittney Griner has been a key member of the team. The 31-year-old was chosen in 2021 as one of the top 25 players in league history and is recognized as one of the best defensive players in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). She earned the Player of the Year Award and a national collegiate championship in 2012, and since beginning her professional career in 2013 with the US women’s national basketball team, she has also won two Olympic gold medals and a WNBA championship.

Russian authorities have been holding Brittney Griner since February 17, when they detained her at Sheremetyevo International Airport on the grounds that she was in possession of illegal vape cartridges containing hashish oil. Griner, like many other female basketball players, plays abroad during the WNBA summer to increase her income and keep up her skill level. The Russian Women’s Basketball Premier League team Griner was representing at the time of her arrest was UMMC Ekaterinburg. Despite having a prescription for it and having packed swiftly, Griner admitted she had no idea how the cannabis oil ended up in her luggage.

Lil Wayne and his support for Griner on “God Did”

Lil Wayne and his verses in the album featuring DJ Khaled and John Legend were in response to the 9-year sentencing of the two-time Olympic Gold medalist. However, he is not the first rapper to voice his support for the towering center. Wayne’s lyrics in the song are as follows: “With the odds stacked against me, I could crack Da Vinci. I know only God can judge us, I say that for Brittney. They smell blood like the sharks, they start actin’ fishy.” Rapper Boosie Badazz expressed his dismay at the sentence a few weeks ago. The rapper vented his displeasure and anger about the sentence on social media.

Brittney Griner eventually agreed to a guilty plea to narcotics charges after being detained for many months. Russian officials recently revealed that talks are underway with the US about sending Griner back to the US as part of a prisoner swap. Other Americans besides the Phoenix Mercury star are reportedly involved in a prospective trade. The agreement includes Paul Whelan, a former spy who was found guilty of espionage. Griner and her family now have cause for hope in light of the most recent report, despite the difficulties.
